Navigating the Complexities of Open Adoption: A Personal Journey

Eight weeks may not feel like an eternity in the grand scheme of life, but when you’re eagerly checking your email multiple times a day for a response, those weeks can stretch on indefinitely.

Our journey with our youngest son’s birthmother has been anything but straightforward. Recently, she decided we should take a break from our regular visits. While we understood her choice, it was a challenging conversation to have with our then-four-year-old son, who had recently begun to grasp the significance of her role in his life.

Since he was just a few weeks old, we had enjoyed regular visits. Initially, he didn’t fully comprehend their importance, but that changed when she gave birth to her second child—a baby boy she chose to parent. We did our best to explain to him who his new sibling was and why it was becoming harder for her to visit.

When she suggested pausing our visits to prevent any confusion or distress for our son, the sense of loss was palpable. We felt it for him, for us, and for our other two children, who had never had the opportunity to connect with a birthparent. Although she still wants updates and photos via email, it doesn’t compare to the in-person interactions we once had.

After weeks of silence, I reached out and waited eight long weeks for a reply. When it finally came, it included an apology and news of another baby—a daughter this time—who she is able to parent as well. This presented another layer of explanation I needed to provide to my son.

As I reflect on this situation, I see my now-five-year-old son, his joy evident in his wide smile, and I can’t help but think of her life evolving, with him becoming less of a focal point. I can’t fully comprehend the immense sacrifice she made when she chose adoption for him, but she is often on my mind. I also think about how this beautiful boy will navigate his feelings and find his place in her life as he grows.

When asked about his birthmother, my son says he loves her and quickly inquires when he can see her again. I wish I had the answers he seeks—not just for today or tomorrow, but for the years ahead. Unfortunately, I don’t have those answers, and perhaps I never will.
