As a parent, revisiting childhood experiences has its perks—like rediscovering the joy of grilled cheese sandwiches. Who knew they were so delightful? Fireflies, rainbows, and sandcastles also bring back fond memories. However, some things from my youth have lost their charm, especially playgrounds.
Don’t get me wrong; I appreciate the need for my kids to burn off energy outside of our home. But the reality of playgrounds makes me cringe. My children have a knack for turning a simple outing into a chaotic circus. They want me to run, chase, and engage in all sorts of activities when all I want is to sip my coffee and scroll through my phone. Why are other parents so eager to join in the fun? Isn’t that what the other kids are for?
To make the most of our playground visits, I’ve established some ground rules that outline my expectations. Hopefully, these guidelines will ensure a smoother experience for everyone involved:
- Swinging Lessons: If you want to swing, you’d better learn how to pump your legs. I’m not your personal swing pusher.
- No Monkey Business: I’m not swinging from the bars. I have no intentions of channeling my inner monkey.
- Slide Avoidance: No sliding for me, thank you. I’d rather not risk getting stuck halfway down.
- Separate Playdates: We are not playmates here. You have your friends, and I’ll enjoy my own company.
- Beware of Sandboxes: Those sandboxes are the enemy. Stay away from them, please.
- Hide and Seek Rules: Playing hide and seek anywhere but home is not enjoyable for me. Let’s not even go there.
- No Need for Attention: Please refrain from yelling “LOOK AT ME!!!” every few seconds. I’m watching—(mostly) keeping an eye on you.
- See-Saw Situation: Don’t even think about asking me to join you on the see-saw. I don’t need a reminder of my weight.
- Avoiding ER Visits: Please do not engage in any activity that could lead to an emergency room visit. If it happens, we may never return.
- The Boredom Warning: If you utter the words “I’m bored,” just know that I can guarantee you’ll find home even more dull.
