Dear precious little milk lover,
There are moments during our breastfeeding journey that I truly despise. Like those late-night awakenings—midnight, to be exact—when you decide it’s time to nurse just as I finally drift into a peaceful slumber. Or that dreadful 2 a.m. wake-up call, when I find myself staring at your dad, who’s blissfully asleep, while I’m wide awake trying to soothe you. Then there’s the 4 a.m. feeding, when you’re so sleepy that your latch feels more like a tiny bite, and I can’t help but wince.
And let’s not forget about 6 a.m., when the clock reminds me that soon I’ll have to get up, even though my eyes are still heavy with exhaustion. By 8:30 a.m., I’m rushing to drop off your sister at school, arms full of a chaotic lunch box, her hair uncombed, and socks nowhere to be found—all because I was desperate for just a few more minutes of sleep that you were so graciously withholding.
I find myself frustrated when I come across negative comments online from people who think I’m doing something wrong for simply feeding you. It’s even more disheartening when I’m nursing you in public, and I notice other parents hurriedly ushering their kids away as if they’re witnessing something scandalous.
But despite all of this, I absolutely love the convenience of breastfeeding, how it’s free, how healthy it is for you, and how it brings you joy. Moreover, I cherish the fact that my right to breastfeed you in public is protected by law, even in those times when I feel like I might not want to nurse. I can’t imagine someone approaching my sleep-deprived self and asking us to move—it would not be pretty!
With all my love,
The tired mom attached to the boobs you adore.
