March is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, a time for reflection and understanding. This year, I decided to write a letter to cerebral palsy, highlighting its impact on the lives of parents with children affected by this condition. My hope is that one day my child will be able to share his own experiences, providing a personal perspective on living with cerebral palsy.
Dear Cerebral Palsy,
You came into our lives four years ago, forever altering our reality. The challenges you present are constant, yet I strive to view you as a chance for growth and learning. You are a relentless source of obstacles, but through you, I’ve discovered profound moments of joy in the most unexpected places.
You have compelled me to confront daunting and intricate information about my child’s health, teaching me to navigate the uncertainty and find solutions even when answers seem elusive. You’ve tempted us to throw in the towel repeatedly, but it is because of you that I’ve learned resilience—I will push through exhaustion, pain, and difficulty.
You are the reason my child struggles to express his needs and desires, but thanks to you, I’ve developed an acute awareness of his every subtle cue, deepening our bond in ways I never anticipated. While you often lead to feelings of isolation, you have also connected us with some of the most compassionate individuals I’ve ever met.
You fill me with concern about how others might treat my son unfairly for something beyond his control, yet because of you, I find myself more open-hearted and willing to give everyone a fair chance. Your presence draws attention in public, prompting thoughtless questions, but you have transformed how I regard those with disabilities. I now make it a point to look them in the eye, smile, and greet them warmly.
Witnessing the lives of those you touch has led me to question the fairness of existence, yet you’ve also taught me to see the inherent beauty and resilience within each person. Some may wonder what makes you, cerebral palsy, so challenging. The answer is clear: you strip away autonomy, making simple tasks like walking, talking, or even swallowing a monumental feat for some.
However, because of you, I’ve come to understand the true essence of companionship. It’s about being there for someone you cherish, no matter what challenges arise. As long as I draw breath, I will be present for my son, sharing this journey together. No matter the hurdles you present, we will find ways to embrace laughter, love, and a full life. That is something you can never take from us.
