Parenthood is a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns. Recently, I found myself in a delightful gathering of fellow moms and their adorable little ones, and it was there that I had a revelation that left me momentarily stunned.

The chat was lively and filled with pride as the moms shared updates about their children: “Little Liam just cut his third tooth, can you believe it?” “Well, Bella crawled all the way across the living room!” “Oh my goodness, look at those big, beautiful eyes on Daisy!” Meanwhile, I was sitting there, observing my own munchkin, Charlie, confidently navigating the playground with his dazzling smile and those striking ocean-blue eyes. I couldn’t help but feel a mix of awe and disbelief. How could these moms not see that my Charlie was the real star of the show?

Then, it struck me like a bolt of lightning—each parent believes their child is the absolute cutest. I was momentarily taken aback. I pride myself on being rational, so surely that would extend to my role as a mother? Objectively speaking, Charlie is the epitome of perfection. People often stop me just to admire his adorable, chubby cheeks and those irresistibly flirty glances he throws. His smile lights up the room, and there’s even a perfect curl of golden hair at the nape of his neck that adds to his charm. He’s clever, funny, and kind. Even his diaper changes, while not a picnic, have their own unique charm.

Surely, little Liam, Bella, and Daisy couldn’t possibly compare to my Charlie. Poor misguided moms, I thought.

But then it hit me again—I just called my son’s poop charming. I had to pause and let that sink in. For a brief moment, I entertained the notion that perhaps everyone would find Charlie’s “mini-nuggets” endearing. Yet, as we all know, there are some universal truths in life, and one of them is that poop isn’t really cute. So, it seemed I had unwittingly appointed myself as the President of the Delusional Mama Club. Oh dear.

With my defenses down, I looked at the lovely babies around me. Each one was indeed unique, precious, and perfect in their own right—just as Charlie is to me. It was a sweet surprise to realize that every child holds a special place in their parent’s heart, and that’s what truly matters.
