We’re heading out for a family getaway! Although, I hesitate to call it a vacation since I’ll be bringing my spirited toddler along. Sure, I’m taking a break from work and heading to the beach, but the chances of finding true relaxation seem slim. My little one’s middle name might as well be “CLIMB THAT!”—he has a knack for finding the highest points to explore.
Typically, a vacation means sleeping in, lounging with a good book, and enjoying a few drinks. But with a toddler in the mix, everything shifts into a different gear. Here’s a rundown of why I suspect our family getaway may not feel much like a vacation:
-
Reading
My partner and I made a few last-minute book purchases online, and honestly, I could almost hear my computer chuckling at my naivete. The likelihood of us unwinding with books on the beach is about as good as winning the lottery. I’m pretty sure the majority of my reading will involve GPS directions and stories about trains. -
Sleeping
This time, it’s not my computer chuckling; it’s my son. He’s firmly established a 6:30 a.m. wake-up time, regardless of the day. It doesn’t matter if we’re on vacation or in some intergalactic space pod—his internal clock runs my life! For him, every day is an adventure. -
Relaxing
Lately, my son’s favorite hobbies include ignoring our instructions and being a bundle of energy. When you combine those traits with his propensity to spin in circles in the middle of a busy street, relaxation becomes a distant dream. -
Drinking
There will definitely be drinking—lots of it. It’ll probably happen in that precious three-hour window after he finally dozes off, just before we collapse into bed ourselves. -
Miscellaneous Activities
What else do people do on vacation? Go to the movies? Nope, toddler. Eat out? Nope, toddler. Enjoy some intimate time? Nope, toddler. Mini-golf might actually happen, although “play” could be a generous term.
I’m not saying we won’t have fun! There will be laughter and memorable moments. I’m genuinely looking forward to it. Just know that it’s not quite the same as a kid-free vacation. At least I’ll be less hungover!

Summary:
A family getaway with a toddler often transforms into a lively adventure rather than a true vacation. While the hopes for reading, sleeping, and relaxing may be dashed, the joy of shared experiences remains. Prepare for a fun-filled time full of energy, laughter, and perhaps a little bit of chaos!
