5 Things You Shouldn’t Say to Single Moms

As a single mother of two in the vibrant city of New York, I often find myself in situations where my parenting journey is met with unsolicited comments and questions. Despite my kids attending a wonderfully diverse school, I can still feel out of place at playdates. Half the time, fellow moms are trying to set me up with someone they know, while the other half are asking about the challenges of being a single parent.

Honestly, I know it’s tough. I’m living it every day! So, I’ve put together a list of five remarks that I wish would just stop:

  1. It must be so hard!
Really? You think? Parenting is challenging regardless of whether you’re single or have a partner. It’s a blanket statement that doesn’t account for the realities of family dynamics. If you’re not ready to offer support, please keep the sympathy to yourself.
  2. I know a great guy I can introduce you to!
I’m single by choice, thanks! Why is being single seen as something that needs fixing? I have a fulfilling life filled with park adventures and fort-building sessions with my kids. There’s nothing sad about it, except perhaps your perception.
  3. Do you ever get time to yourself?
Not really, but thanks for the reminder! I would love some peace and quiet to enjoy a bath or finish a book, yet it seems like a distant dream. If you’re genuinely interested, how about offering practical ways to help instead of asking these questions?
  4. Are you happy?
That’s a loaded question! But let’s turn it back to you: are you happy? Asking me this makes me question my mood. And just for the record, happiness isn’t solely tied to relationship status—there are plenty of unhappy people in couples too.
  5. So, what happened?
This question is often veiled but is usually on everyone’s mind. They want to know the backstory behind my single status. The truth is, my reasons are personal, and I’ll share when I feel comfortable—if at all.

Thank you for understanding; this message is on behalf of every single mom who’s been asked these inappropriate questions before.
