The Humane Society of Missouri has launched the Shelter Buddies Reading Program, inviting kids to read to dogs that are looking for a little extra affection.
The main aim of the Buddies program is to help dogs feel more at ease around people, increasing their chances of adoption. Children aged six to 15 receive training on how to interact with dogs, learning to read their body language to identify signs of anxiety or fear. Volunteers are encouraged to sit and read to the dogs that appear shy or overly energetic, rewarding them with treats when they approach calmly.
Program coordinator Mia Johnson shared with an animal advocacy site that the initiative aims “to support our shy and fearful dogs without forcing them into physical contact.” She explained, “When potential adopters visit, these dogs are more likely to be seen if they’re engaging rather than hiding away.”
Since its launch last holiday season, the program has become a monthly activity. Once kids complete ten hours of supervised training, they are welcome to return and read to the dogs at their convenience. This experience is not only beneficial for the animals but also for the children. “It encourages kids to develop empathy for animals,” Mia added. “They learn about the fear some animals experience and the positive impact they can have, which helps them connect better with both animals and people.”
The response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive, and Mia hopes to expand it to include other animals, like cats, and to partner with additional shelters across the state. This innovative approach not only aids dogs awaiting adoption but is also a delightful experience for everyone involved.
