Dear Fellow Parent at the Playground:
I felt compelled to reach out regarding our children’s interaction recently. Allow me to introduce myself—I was the father whose child proudly donned a shimmering pink dress.
As we arrived at the playground, my child was practically buzzing with excitement. I asked, “Are you certain you want to wear your dress?” To which they exuberantly replied, “Yes! I want everyone to see how beautiful I look in this dress!”
This moment was significant, not just for them but for me as well. It was the first time they expressed a desire to wear a dress outside, and I chose to embrace it. After all, who truly cares about societal norms, right?
As you observed, my child could hardly contain their joy while showcasing the dress to your daughter and her friend. They skipped, twirled, and eagerly asked, “Do you like my dress? Can I play with you?” Those minutes were filled with unfiltered joy, and it was a sight to behold.
How I wish they could maintain that level of happiness throughout their life. Unfortunately, societal pressures often suppress such pure excitement. It’s rare for adults to express unrestrained joy, and, inevitably, my child may also face moments of self-consciousness as they grow.
Your daughter and her friend, understandably older and less interested in welcoming a new playmate, did not engage. Yet my child continued, “Look at my beautiful Sleeping Beauty dress!” It was then that your daughter walked past me and remarked, “I don’t want to play with a boy in a dress.” I admit, I felt a surge of protectiveness.
Given the setting—a rural area in Connecticut—it’s reasonable to assume that parents might discourage gender expression. However, when your daughter pointed out, “Daddy, that boy is wearing a dress,” your response was remarkable: “Well, you’re wearing pants, aren’t you?” This moment resonated with me deeply, as it demonstrated your understanding and compassion.
Like you, I want my children to feel happy and accepted. While I worry that my child’s expression of wearing princess attire may one day lead to feelings of betrayal, I also recognize how much they cherish it now.
Thank you for supporting my child’s choices and fostering acceptance in your daughter. I anticipate that my child may face criticism for their self-expression, and that thought weighs heavily on me. My goal is to shield their exuberance for as long as possible, though I know I can’t protect them from everything.
More importantly, fostering their self-expression is essential, so we encourage their creativity and joy, delaying any potential hardships for as long as we can.
Thank you for being a positive influence in this moment. Your kindness has inspired me to be a better parent.
Warm regards,
Tom
