Over the past few weeks, I’ve found myself in several uncomfortable situations where it was unclear how to respond appropriately.
In one instance, my child was injured by a friend’s child—specifically, they were accidentally hit in the head with a rock. Should I intervene? It was unintentional, and I could tell the other child felt remorse. Ultimately, I chose not to say anything.
In another scenario, I learned about the teenage child of an acquaintance—someone I see regularly—engaging in unhealthy and illegal activities. If that were my child, I would be devastated. What should I do? Should I intervene or remain silent?
I believe many parents face similar dilemmas, often unsure whether to speak up or stay quiet. Therefore, I want to make my stance unequivocally clear:
If my child throws a rock and injures yours, please inform me—regardless of whether it was an accident. If my child is disrespectful to you, I want to know. If they are involved with drugs, please tell me. If you see my child in a location that raises concerns, I would appreciate your insight. Even if you suspect they might be engaging in risky behavior but lack definitive proof, I encourage you to share your concerns.
If you observe my child bullying others or simply acting inappropriately, please bring it to my attention. I want to be aware of any situations involving sexual activity, inappropriate language, or harmful associations with individuals who may negatively influence them.
Additionally, if you notice something about me—like an unkempt appearance or personal issues—I would appreciate your honesty.
If you are uncertain about whether to discuss a matter with me, I want to encourage open communication. A simple reference to our previous conversation about my willingness to receive feedback would suffice.
