Because I Said So: The Truth Behind Parenting Decisions

The little ones are always around me, day in and day out. I find myself dedicating what feels like every waking hour to ensuring they’re safe and sound for tomorrow. Some days are a breeze: school days, when my partner installed baby gates, or the rare occasion when both the toddler and the 4-year-old nap at the same time.

Yet, there are those other days that test my limits: the fateful moment when my toddler discovered the toilet bowl, the day my 9-year-old forgot his homework at school, or when all I craved was a peaceful shower (which never happened). As the sun sets, my patience starts to dwindle. I can shift from being the patient parent to a frenzied version of myself in the blink of an eye. Suddenly, the questions become more outrageous, and my “No’s” come flying out like a pitcher on opening day. “But WHHYYY, MOMMY?”

Because I said so.

It’s such a ridiculous phrase, isn’t it? “Because I said so?” What does that even mean? After all the time I dedicate to nurturing their minds—reading to them, engaging in play, building things together—I aim to raise critical thinkers. However, when exhaustion sets in, my patience evaporates, and all that effort feels wasted.

Because I said so. It’s as if they all morph into little Veruca Salts, demanding their whims instantly. Instead of thoughtfully explaining, “Sweetheart, you can’t have a unicorn right now because they exist only in fantasy, and where would it even live?” I find myself resorting to, “No. Because I said so.”

Why? Because I’m tired. I’m exhausted from having to rationalize every decision to someone who barely reaches my waist. I’m too worn out—too overwhelmed, really—to cater to their every request at a moment’s notice. So here’s the bottom line: the answer is no.

Because I said so. You might have better luck asking for something outrageous in the morning, unless, of course, you keep me up all night.
