Why I Apply Lipstick Daily: A Personal Insight

As a busy parent juggling a freelance writing career and caring for two small children, I often find myself prioritizing my family’s needs over my own. While I may skip some of my previous self-care routines, such as regular showers or wearing high heels, I always make time for a quick application of lipstick.

My daily routine consists of managing my 3-year-old son and my 10-month-old daughter, often with only my partner as the other adult in the house. There are moments, especially during the colder months, when I barely step outside. Yet, I hold onto this small ritual of applying lipstick as a form of self-care.

First and foremost, the act of putting on lipstick enhances my appearance, and when I feel I look good, my confidence boosts. While my partner would certainly love me without makeup, a little effort in how I present myself goes a long way. After all, I expect him to maintain his grooming too.

Wearing lipstick also serves as a nostalgic reminder of my life before children. Back then, I had the luxury of indulging in regular beauty treatments—weekly blowouts and monthly pedicures. Now, with the financial priorities shifted toward childcare and essentials, my beauty routine has simplified, but lipstick remains a staple.

Switching from summer’s coral tints to autumn’s berry hues allows me to feel connected to the changing seasons, despite my wardrobe lagging behind current trends. As mothers, we often place our children’s needs above our own, rushing to get them ready while neglecting our own morning routines. Yet, taking a moment to apply lipstick is a small but significant act of self-kindness. This brief ritual, which only takes seconds, empowers me to tackle the day’s challenges—whether it’s cleaning up spills or changing diapers.

Some may view this practice as vanity, but I argue that a touch of vanity can be beneficial. Just as I apply sunscreen daily to safeguard my skin, I recognize that self-care plays a crucial role in overall well-being. I also strive to eat healthily and incorporate physical activity into my life, even if it’s just dancing with my kids. While these choices help reduce health risks, they also support my journey back to fitting into my pre-pregnancy clothes.

Lipstick symbolizes the person I used to be, as well as the individual I aspire to become once these demanding parenting years pass. It’s a little touch of sanity in a tube.
