From the moment we embrace parenthood, we instinctively yearn to shield our children from the harsh realities of the world. This urge to protect our little ones may stem from our primal instincts, an innate drive to ensure their safety and well-being. Or perhaps it arises from our own longing for comfort and security, keeping us tucked away from the often harsh truths of life. Regardless of the reason, the desire to guard our children from life’s struggles remains a powerful force.
However, we must recognize that, ultimately, we cannot shield them from everything. Deep down, we understand this fundamental truth. So, what benefit is there in painting a rosy picture of the world when they will inevitably confront its harsh realities? The truths they will face will sting even more if we have filled their minds with fantasies of a perfect world.
While I wholeheartedly believe in allowing children to enjoy the wonder and innocence of their early years, I also feel a strong responsibility to prepare them for the challenges life may bring. Here are some hard truths I strive to teach my kids.
There are truly bad individuals in this world.
Yes, there are people who actively seek to harm others, deriving pleasure from their cruelty. Yet, there are also incredibly kind souls. It’s crucial for our children to aspire to be among the good, not just for those they cherish, but for strangers as well. The more compassionate individuals we have in the world, the greater chance we have to overshadow the malevolence. Always strive to be a beacon of kindness, even in the face of wrongdoing.
Not everyone will be fond of you.
And that’s perfectly okay. The world is a diverse place filled with varying tastes and preferences. It’s natural for some people not to resonate with you. Don’t dwell on their negativity or feel pressured to change who you are to fit into their mold. Embrace your authentic self and take comfort in knowing there are plenty of others who appreciate you just as you are.
Life is inherently unfair.
A wise person once said that the only fair thing about life is its unfairness. Each person carries their own burdens, and sometimes, despite our best efforts, things simply don’t go as planned. This is the nature of existence. What’s important is to keep moving forward, putting your best foot out there.
The world doesn’t owe you anything.
