The 10 Most Absurd Questions This Adoptive Family Has Encountered

  1. “Are you planning to tell the kids they are adopted?” It’s pretty obvious that we’re white and they’re black, right? I think if we didn’t mention their adoption, they’d catch on eventually.
  2. “Why didn’t their mom keep them? They’re so beautiful!” The circumstances surrounding our kids’ adoption had nothing to do with their appearance. They were loved and wanted by their birth parents. As for why they were placed for adoption? That’s really none of your business.
  3. “Aren’t you worried that an open adoption might lead to their biological parents trying to reclaim them?” Not at all. Our adoptions are both ethical and legal. We chose open adoption because it benefits everyone involved—our children, their birth parents, and us.
  4. “What would you do if your kids’ biological parents showed up at your door one day?” We’d greet them with warmth, invite them in for a chat and maybe some wine. But thanks for the weird hypothetical scenario.
  5. “Now that you’ve adopted, are you going to try for your own kids?” My kids are absolutely “my own.” No qualifiers needed or appreciated.
  6. “God bless you for taking in these poor kids, they’re so lucky!” Our children are not charity cases. They come from loving biological parents who felt unable to raise them at that time. We consider it an honor to be their parents—and honestly, we’re the lucky ones here!
  7. “Were their birth parents using drugs?” Are you serious? Because that question is out of line and none of your business.
  8. “They’re so adorable! Which country did they come from?” Actually, they’re from Missouri.
  9. “Are they full siblings or mixed?” My kids are not a blend of dog breeds or coffee types. They’re real people with thoughts and feelings. Thanks for being weird again.
  10. “Are they all actual siblings?” Yes, they are. Can’t you see how they’re currently torturing each other? That’s as real as it gets!
