How I Prefer to Spend My Time Alone

What do I genuinely crave during my moments of solitude? It’s not a glass of wine, a quick nap, or even a night out with friends. What I truly desire is the luxury of being alone. Just imagine stepping out the front door into a world of uninterrupted freedom for a few blissful hours without children. And do you know how I wish to utilize that precious time?

I want to tackle tasks that usually take forever and often leave me feeling overwhelmed—all because I have kids around me constantly. During my alone time, I’ll drive to the shopping mall without the usual chaos of little ones arguing or hollering in the backseat. There won’t be any disapproving glances in the rearview mirror or half-hearted threats of mischief if my children don’t “settle down immediately!” I’ll park wherever I choose without worrying about my kindergartner launching into a spontaneous ninja kick or bolting through the parking lot.

Then, I’ll saunter into a hair salon and request a haircut. I would be thrilled to wait 35 minutes while flipping through old magazines—35 glorious minutes of peace without kids!

Next, I’ll waltz into a store like Old Navy or The Gap and request a fitting room. Just picture it: I can try on as many as 9 pairs of jeans without a toddler to wrangle or a kindergartner asking loud, embarrassing questions about my wardrobe choices.

Oh, and I’ll make a stop at a high-end lingerie store, browsing through items that no mother with young kids should even consider. Perhaps this little indulgence will encourage my partner to support more days like this in the future.

After shopping, I might pop by a coffee shop and order a latte without small voices pleading for overpriced juices or pastries. I may even savor my coffee right there, in serene quietness.

I could also make an actual phone call (gasp!) and have a conversation that lasts longer than 30 seconds without interruptions from kids. I’d chat freely, sprinkling in some colorful language into my sentences.

The long way home might include an impromptu visit to a friend because—guess what?—I can do that!

Once I return home, I’ll indulge in an exceptionally long, hot shower. No little ones will be clamoring to join me, and I won’t hear any cries of frustration demanding my attention. I’ll treat myself to a sugar scrub and even shave my legs!

To cap off my day of self-care, I might even find pleasure in cleaning the house. What usually takes me all day can be accomplished in just an hour, as I won’t have to repeat myself while managing my children’s constant mess-making.

For dinner, I’ll indulge in all the carbs I want, followed by a glass of wine for dessert. I’ll conclude my day by lounging on the couch, watching TV without getting up to investigate any strange noises from the dining area.

Finally, I’ll enjoy a well-deserved, uninterrupted night’s sleep lasting a whole nine hours.

Now, I just need to persuade my partner to support this plan. Fingers crossed!
