As we age, our bodies often remind us of the passage of time in various, sometimes humorous, ways. With 861 birthday candles behind me, I find myself reflecting on the milestones and changes I’ve experienced. The historical backdrop of my birth, coinciding with Gerald Ford’s presidency and the end of the Vietnam War, serves as a poignant reminder of my age. Now, as I navigate through life, particularly after the challenges of childbirth, I’ve compiled a list of physical activities that have become increasingly difficult for me at the age of 41 years, 6 months, and 13 days (give or take a few).
- Bending Over: Attempting to pick anything up from the floor often leads to a strained back. Whether it’s a lightweight dumbbell or a stray Lego, bending can be a risky endeavor.
- Jumping on a Trampoline: The thought of bouncing on a trampoline is enticing, but the physical consequences—like accidental leakage—make it less appealing. While I would love to join in on the fun, the practicality of adult life often wins out.
- Memory Retention: I can recall every lyric to “Ice Ice Baby,” yet I frequently forget why I entered a room.
- Staying Up Late: My ability to party has dwindled significantly. I now struggle to stay awake until the end of a true crime show, let alone closing time at a bar filled with much younger patrons.
- Going Bra-less: A recent grocery trip without a bra ended with an embarrassing incident involving a can of soup. It’s a clear sign that some things are best left behind as we age.
- Makeup-Free Outings: At this stage, makeup isn’t just for aesthetics; it’s a shield against unsolicited concern from strangers about my well-being.
- Cartwheels: While gymnastics may not be in my future, the ability to do a cartwheel without feeling dizzy or nauseous is a fond memory of my youth.
- Shopping at Trendy Stores: My days of purchasing trendy clothing from stores like Forever 21 are gone. Now, I realize that even their sizes may not accommodate me.
- Intimacy in Small Spaces: Sharing a twin bed for intimate moments has become a challenge that highlights the physical differences of age.
- Handling Hangovers: Once a simple inconvenience, hangovers now feel like a monumental task, making me wish for simpler remedies.
