While I have never been interested in adult entertainment, I do indulge in a different kind of viewing pleasure. I’ve never paid for premium channels, and my internet history is strictly family-friendly. Why pay for something outdated when you can access a more engaging—and completely wholesome—alternative for free?
Just flip to channel 665, which is HGTV in HD on my television, and you’ll see exactly what I mean. You will find yourself captivated by unique soapstone island countertops, sleek subway tile backsplashes, charmingly mismatched wooden floors in inviting entryways, and custom-built shoe storage in walk-in closets that are more stunning and organized than any kitchen you might find on Cousins on Call. Seriously, the closets are a sight to behold. The more I watch, the more I crave.
Late into the night, I lose track of time, eagerly anticipating whether a delightful family of three (soon to be four with a new little one!) will decide to Love It or List It. My inclination is usually to Love It. The transformation of that dreary basement into a state-of-the-art game room, home office, and guest suite with a full bathroom is simply irresistible.
I’m also infatuated with the Property Brothers’ incredible ability to turn a dated 1970s Cape Cod fixer-upper into a dream home for a young couple eager to remain close to the city while providing space for their dogs, an in-home yoga studio, and a music room—all within a budget that would barely cover a new HVAC system. The speed at which they complete these projects is nothing short of magical, especially when I consider how long it took me to clean my garage last spring.
Although I may not agree with every design choice made by my favorite HGTV stars, I can’t help but admire their creations. While media rooms, three-car garages, and custom fire pits might not excite me, I recognize that they may bring joy to others, and I respect that.
I know I’m not alone in this passion. During a recent night out with college friends, we engaged in an extensive discussion about our latest guilty pleasures. Some of my friends introduced me to new shows like Rehab Addict and Fixer Upper. Have you seen the fireplace transformations on Rehab Addict? It’s almost too good to be true.
I’m aware there are certainly better ways I could spend my time, but there are also worse options, right? For now, I’ll continue to find joy in watching as House Hunters search for that ideal bungalow within walking distance of the beach and park, all while staying well under budget, of course.

In summary, while I may indulge in a fascination with home design shows, I find comfort and pleasure in the transformations and creativity they showcase. Whether it’s the stunning renovations or the joy of finding a dream home, there’s a certain thrill that captivates me and many others.
