Dear 40-Year-Old Me,
You may recall the insecurities you faced back in your twenties, particularly regarding your body. For example, although you had a smaller bust, you confidently donned a G-string bikini at that pool party. Despite feeling shy and positioning yourself against the wall, you made that choice. Fast forward to today, and your current self might hesitate to show that same amount of skin in the sunlight—perhaps even in any light.
Swimming remains a passion, even as your current swimsuit choice leads to an unflattering appearance. Earlier today, I was compelled to confront a task many dread: swimsuit shopping. All I sought was a straightforward Speedo. Uncertain of my size, I grabbed a few options and braced myself for the dressing room.
My strategy was simple: hastily undress, try on the suit, and if it fit, I would claim victory. As I bent over to pull on the swimsuit bottom, the alarm blared—a loud, persistent buzzing that startled me. Was I in the wrong dressing room? Were my curves that shocking? I braced myself for a potential intervention.
Unlike the carefree day you wore that G-string, today’s alarm turned out to be an Amber alert on my phone. While I empathized with the situation, I was relieved it wasn’t my awkward position that had caused an emergency.
I quickly changed back into my clothes, purchased the suit, and exited the store. Admittedly, this swimsuit lacks the allure of your previous choice, but the important thing is that I am still willing to wear one. If given the chance, I would have embraced my confidence and showcased my body on that deck.
I urge you to take pride in your body as you age. Yes, it may bear the marks of life—gravity may take its toll with a droop here and a drop there. However, this body will also dance at weddings, paddleboard in exotic locations, enjoy thrilling water slides, conquer hiking trails, serve as a makeshift pillow for tired children, and revel in the joy of laughter. Some days, it may struggle to rise from bed, while others will feel like they fly by.
Acknowledging imperfections is part of the journey, but remember, it’s your body, and it suits you perfectly. Embrace it without hesitation.
