We’ve all been there. You find yourself exclaiming, “Don’t run with scissors!” and instantly regret it as the words slip out. Congratulations, you’ve become your mother.

The moment I realized I’d turned into my mother was when I warned my child to wear clean underwear in case they were involved in a truck accident. Really? Upon further reflection, I realized I’ve not only morphed into my mom, but I’ve also channeled numerous incredible women.

Remember that classic film Sybil? Sally Field portrayed a woman with multiple personalities, each emerging as needed. While I recognize this is a serious condition, I can’t help but think that many perspectives make the parenting journey a bit smoother.

Most of the personas I tap into are iconic moms from television and film. Some aren’t even mothers, yet their wisdom is invaluable. It’s like I have a toolbox of maternal figures ready to assist when the need arises.

I am my mother, and…

  1. Minnie Perkins – Whenever my kids have a last-minute school project, I channel Minnie. With a stash of craft supplies at my fingertips, I can whip up a masterpiece in no time.
  2. Carla Bennett – Let’s be honest: I envy her. A stay-at-home mom of six with a perfect family life, and she even has domestic help! If only I had a housekeeper to manage the chaos so I could focus on my kids’ dilemmas.
  3. Gloria Ramirez (from Modern Family) – I’m always looking for that killer confidence. Who wouldn’t want to feel fabulous while tackling daily challenges? If you’re interested in more about Gloria’s world, check out this insightful post on Modern Family Blog.
  4. Martha Stewart – When crafting is a must, Martha is my go-to. She helps me gather the essentials for any last-minute school assignment while keeping my cool.
  5. Roseanne Conner – Sometimes I need Roseanne’s unfiltered honesty to express my feelings. Although she often arrives late to the party, her spirit encourages me to stand up for myself.
  6. Nurse Rena (from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) – Not a mother, but her calm demeanor amidst chaos is something I strive for. “Stay calm, and we’ll sort this out,” I tell myself when life gets overwhelming.
  7. Shirley Taylor – She’s my inspiration when it comes to getting a gaggle of kids out the door. If only I had her magical ability to coordinate everyone on time for school or activities.
  8. Morticia Blackwood – With her dark elegance, Morticia runs her family effortlessly, proving that embracing uniqueness can be a source of strength.
  9. Reba Hart – The ultimate multitasker, Reba shows me it’s possible to balance family, work, and self-care. She inspires me to whip up delicious meals and create lasting memories.

Oh dear, I only have nine women on my list, and it feels unbalanced. I need a tenth! Any suggestions? My need for symmetry is kicking in.

In summary, juggling the myriad roles of motherhood often requires invoking various figures that inspire us. From the wise and nurturing to the strong and fearless, these personas can help navigate the complexities of parenting.
