Reimagining the To-Do List

As a new day dawns, I find myself inundated with an endless list of responsibilities. The demands of adulthood loom large: tidy this up, organize that, speed up, achieve more. For moms like me, the to-do list seems to stretch into infinity. And honestly, I’ve had enough. I refuse to start my morning expecting the impossible.

So, I’m making a change. Instead of a to-do list, I’m adopting a to-don’t list. Here’s what I commit to avoiding:

  • I won’t oversleep and miss out on my peaceful moments with a warm cup of coffee, a journal, and a pen by the window.
  • I’ll refrain from rushing my kids unless there’s a real emergency.
  • I won’t utter the words “hurry up” even once.
  • I’ll avoid aimlessly scrolling through social media for trivial updates from acquaintances.
  • I won’t lose my temper or allow anyone to spoil my day.
  • I won’t waste my energy dwelling on negative thoughts about others.
  • I won’t stress about cleaning when I could be lying in the grass, watching birds soar or digging in the garden.
  • I won’t criticize my partner, regardless of how late he comes home or how often he dozes off on the couch.
  • I won’t undermine my self-worth by comparing myself to others or worrying about their opinions of me.
  • I won’t feel guilty about what I didn’t achieve.
  • I won’t let a great book go unread.
  • I won’t deny a friend’s request for help.
  • I won’t question my child’s food choices or lack thereof.
  • I won’t fret if my daughter forgets her coat.
  • I won’t stress over how long bedtime routines take this week.
  • I won’t dwell on the vegetables we didn’t eat.
  • I won’t be a clock-watcher, fixating on the schedule.
  • I won’t miss out on playful moments, as those are the most precious.
  • I won’t strive for perfection, nor will I expect it from others.

If I’m fortunate, I might finally find freedom from my never-ending lists. And that’s a refreshing thought.
