As a parent, I find myself contemplating my son’s awareness of his racial identity. While he recognizes that he has darker skin than I do and that his father is white, he remains blissfully unaware of the complex societal issues associated with his identity as a Black child in America. He has yet to learn about the painful legacies of the slave trade, the Jim Crow laws, or pivotal moments in the Civil Rights Movement, such as the marches and speeches that shaped history. Current events in places like Ferguson, McKinney, Cleveland, and Sanford are unfamiliar to him, as is the significance of the phrase “Black Lives Matter.” To him, people are not treated differently based on skin color.
Though my son is currently innocent of the historical injustices faced by the African American community, it is inevitable that he will come to understand these realities. By the time he enters elementary school, he will be introduced to Black history, including the struggles for freedom and equality that have paved the way for our diverse family. The fact that we embody a blend of different backgrounds is a testament to the progress made through countless sacrifices.
As he delves into the past, my son will also discover the strength found in the stories of remarkable individuals who overcame adversity. He will learn about the courage of figures like Harriet Tubman, the resolve of Rosa Parks, and the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. He will come to appreciate the hard-won civil rights and the ongoing journey toward racial equality and reconciliation. There remains much work to be done, but we have indeed made strides as a society.
For now, my son enjoys using various crayons to color the skin tones of those he loves, understanding that affection and trust transcend color. Even at a young age, he grasps that relationships are founded on love and trust, which can help heal divisions caused by prejudice. Love has the power to dismantle hatred and foster unity, creating bonds of strength where discord once thrived.
