As a parent, the transition to kindergarten can evoke a myriad of emotions, especially for those of us preparing to send our first child off to school. For my son Max, the upcoming first day is filled with both excitement and anxiety. He will be boarding a large yellow school bus surrounded by older children, facing new directions, activities, and expectations that may feel overwhelming.
While many parents might primarily fret about their child’s tears on that day, my concerns are a bit more unique. Max is an exuberant 5-year-old with strong opinions, and while he likely won’t shed tears, I may find myself feeling quite anxious about the following 25 worries.
- Will he try to consume glue?
- What if a disruptive peer intimidates him?
- How will he react when he can’t watch his favorite show after lunch?
- Will he accidentally use inappropriate language in class?
- He takes an age to use the restroom; what happens when he’s in a hurry?
- If a classmate claims an animal is superior, will he argue back loudly?
- His lack of modesty is concerning; will he feel comfortable stripping down?
- He enjoys outdoor urination—will he feel the urge at school?
- Will he correct the teacher like he does with me?
- In a distracted moment, will he wipe his nose on the teacher’s clothing?
- Will he share embarrassing family anecdotes, like his dad’s gas issues?
- Is he going to only want dessert and bring home a note about healthier choices?
- What if he expresses frustration loudly when the lesson doesn’t interest him?
- Will gym class turn into a stage for his loud antics?
- Honestly, his restroom habits are worrisome. What will happen?
- Will he forget his stop on the bus?
- Will he disclose something awkward about me in front of the class?
- Is he going to struggle to make friends?
- Will he come home claiming multiple crushes?
- Will he show off his underwear during Show and Tell, as he has with the mailman?
- Is he going to leap up mid-lesson to display his ninja skills?
- Will he inadvertently start a “ninja club” during recess?
- Am I expecting a call from the principal?
- Is he going to take scissor dexterity too far and accidentally give someone a haircut?
- Will he be thrilled or disheartened to learn that school is a daily commitment?
I can’t help but feel that a significant portion of these scenarios will play out in some form. Perhaps I can sweeten the deal with some treats for the teacher if he proves to be as spirited in school as he is at home. Meanwhile, I am savoring the last few days of summer, filled with both trepidation and anticipation.
