As the back-to-school season approaches, I find myself in stark contrast to other parents who seem to be reveling in the return to structured schedules. While I acknowledge the advantages of a few uninterrupted hours to work, I can’t help but feel a bit apprehensive. Here are my reasons for not being quite ready for this annual shift.
1. Mornings Are Not My Strength.
My routine has been finely tuned to work late into the night and wake up comfortably around 9 a.m. The kids have learned how to entertain themselves until I’m ready, but now I’m expected to rise at the crack of dawn. This adjustment is not something I’m looking forward to.
2. Getting My Son Ready Feels Like Herding Cats.
Convincing my son to leave his bed is a challenge in itself. Once he’s finally awake, he appears in a daze, and I find myself racing against time to ensure he eats breakfast and gets dressed properly—while my daughter smugly observes, dressed and ready to go.
3. Lunch Preparation Before Coffee.
Although it’s entirely feasible to prepare lunches the night before, I often find myself rushing to assemble meals in the morning before I’ve had my caffeine fix. The cafeteria options are less than appealing, which adds to my morning stress.
4. Heightened Grooming Standards.
During the relaxed summer months, we can let hygiene slide a bit, but once school starts, the judgment from teachers and other parents becomes a factor. The pressure to maintain a clean and presentable appearance for my children is daunting.
5. Closed-Toed Shoes Again.
After a summer of casual footwear, transitioning back to closed-toed shoes is a struggle. My children suddenly become hypersensitive to discomfort, voicing complaints about shoes and socks that seem trivial to me.
6. The Crazy Schedule.
The hectic pace of the school year is overwhelming. Juggling appointments, extracurricular activities, and other commitments feels exhausting. The spontaneous fun of summer gives way to a rigid timetable that can be difficult to manage.
7. Homework Hassles.
The introduction of homework feels unjust after spending six hours in school. Now, my evenings are disrupted with assignments, making me reminisce about my own school days when I thought I had left homework behind.
8. Earlier Bedtimes.
The freedom of staying up a little later is gone, replaced by the necessity of ensuring my children get sufficient sleep. This routine change will be a hard pill to swallow.
9. Fundraising Fatigue.
School fundraisers seem to come out of nowhere, demanding financial contributions that can add up quickly. I often find myself wishing for a break from those endless requests.
And to be completely honest, I will miss my children when they are away at school. While their constant presence can be overwhelming, I genuinely enjoy having them around during the summer.
