“Career Woman,” a tribute to the bold hairstyles and ambitions of working-class women from the 1980s, is now 27 years old. I revisited it for the first time since its original release, and it felt as if no time had passed. Back then, I was in middle school, the lead actor was 46, and one of the supporting actresses was a comedic gem on the ferry. However, nearly three decades can shift one’s perspective. Here are 25 observations I made while watching “Career Woman” in 2015.
- Ah yes, the character Mike, portrayed by a young actor, serves as Tess’s unreliable boyfriend. A perfect representation of 1980s charm.
- The film opens with the iconic skyline featuring the World Trade Center, a touching reminder of the past.
- Carly Simon’s “Let the River Run” makes me feel like jumping into some retro workout gear and jogging with enthusiasm. Time to download that song!
- The line by the friend, “Why would you need speech class? You talk just fine,” is truly one of the most memorable quotes in cinema.
- And her makeup! Those eyes are a work of art, reminiscent of a rock band’s stage presence.
- Mike flipping through a car magazine on Tess’s birthday while she gets ready in disappointment captures the essence of a failing relationship. Her reaction about gift expectations resonates with many women.
- The casting of a certain actor as Bob fits perfectly, especially in a memorable scene in a limo.
- Tess’s revenge on her boss by typing a scathing remark for all to see serves as a fantasy for anyone who’s dealt with workplace sexism.
- The three female characters—Tess’s friend, the HR manager, and the boss—each embody different responses to workplace challenges, showcasing the complexity of navigating sexism.
- SHIRTLESS SCENE ALERT!
- The $6,000 dress Tess finds elicits a nostalgic wish for such luxury, though now I’d worry about spills.
- The character’s reaction to the dress price is priceless: “Six thousand dollars! And it’s not even leather!”
- After a long day, I’d love to have some relaxation aids at my disposal, maybe even a little tequila.
- A daydream about having that shirtless actor around for a bit of relaxation sounds delightful.
- A character’s advice about maintaining connections in professional life rings true: “Today’s junior prick, tomorrow’s senior partner.”
- A young actress from a famous film makes a brief appearance as a bridesmaid—time to rewatch that classic!
- A familiar face from a popular TV series also pops up as a guest—definitely need to revisit that show!
- Tess’s line about her dual skills makes me cringe slightly, as it feels out of place, but I can roll with it.
- The romantic gesture of carrying Tess up the stairs is heartwarming and charming.
- The best friend’s wit shines through with her playful offer to the lead man.
- I appreciate how Jack allows Tess to take charge in their adventurous escapades, even if he has his reservations.
- A classic ballad plays at a pivotal party scene, stirring up feelings reminiscent of my youth.
- The touching moment when the lead actor prepares a lunch for Tess is endearing.
- Tess’s straightforward approach to her new assistant seems to dismantle barriers for women in the workplace.
- Right?
