Breaking Parenting Norms: A Personal Journey

As a first-time mother at 34, I had a plethora of ideas about the dos and don’ts of parenting. However, the reality of motherhood proved to be far more complex, revealing that many of my self-imposed rules were not as rigid as I thought. Here are eight parenting guidelines I ended up breaking—and reasons why you might consider doing the same.

  1. No Co-Sleeping
Initially, I envisioned my infant sleeping soundly in a bassinet. But after countless sleepless nights, co-sleeping became a lifeline. When you’re desperately tired, you’ll do anything to get a few hours of rest, even if that means sharing your bed. Now, even as our son is 6, we still enjoy family sleepovers every Friday night.
  2. No Formula
While I aimed to exclusively breastfeed until the age of 2, there were moments when formula was a lifesaver, allowing me to regain my sanity. My partner pointed out that my struggles were unnecessary, leading to happier nights for all involved.
  3. No Sugar
Growing up, my father was adamantly against sugar, which only fueled my secret indulgences. I’ve since learned that moderation is key. My child enjoys the occasional treat without developing an overpowering obsession with sweets.
  4. Only Organic Food
While organic food is ideal, financial constraints have made it less feasible at times. Convenience often takes precedence, especially when balancing work and parenting. My own upbringing included less-than-healthy foods, yet I turned out just fine.
  5. No Television
Though we were not big TV watchers, I eventually found that, as a work-at-home mom, allowing some screen time provided much-needed downtime. Today, my son enjoys a mix of educational programs and fun shows, and I believe it helps him learn moderation.
  6. No Separate Meals
Not every family member shares the same tastes. My son has preferences that differ significantly from mine, especially after discovering my celiac disease. I prepare a main dish everyone can enjoy while adding sides that suit their palates.
  7. No Time-Outs
I once viewed time-outs as a harsh form of discipline. However, I soon realized that they often served to calm me down, allowing for a more constructive resolution to conflicts. Sometimes, I’m the one who needs a moment alone!
  8. No Bribery
When faced with challenging situations, like grocery shopping with a restless child or doctor visits, a small reward can be a practical way to avert a meltdown. It’s a psychological trade-off that often proves worthwhile.

Ultimately, the only rule I adhere to is to ensure my son knows it’s perfectly acceptable for boys to express affection. Whether it’s tickling toes at bedtime or sharing extra hugs, nurturing emotional bonds is essential—after all, childhood is fleeting.
