The Foot Massage Dilemma

When your partner lets you down yet again over something trivial, it can be quite frustrating. Just the other evening, after stepping away from my computer, my husband Alex and I settled down in our bedroom. We were reminiscing about the amusing antics of our kids, Lily, Ben, and Evan, when I subtly attempted to coax him into giving me a foot massage. My feet were throbbing after wearing heels for three hours, and I was in dire need of relief. Sadly, Alex completely brushed off my attempts for attention.

Eventually, I resorted to a more direct approach. “Please, can you just rub my feet? Pretty please?”

“Ugh, I’m not rubbing your feet,” he shot back, clearly unimpressed.

“Why not?” I pleaded. “You always say my feet are cute, and they really hurt right now. Just a little rub?”

“Your feet used to be cute,” he replied, hesitating. “They were… um… painted.”

“Then just imagine them red!” I countered.

“Well, they were cuter before. Just… um… different… uh, younger.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, giving him a look that clearly communicated he’d crossed a line. “You’re saying my feet are old?”

“Look,” he explained defensively, “you’re thirteen years older than when we first met. Of course, your feet look older. Do you think your mom’s feet are ‘cute’? As you age, your feet lose that cuteness. It’s just how life works, you know?”

“No, Alex, I really don’t know!”

He could have pointed out any number of things: “Your feet are dry,” “They’re veiny,” or even “They could use some lotion.” But old? OLD??? For the record, they are neither of those things. Sure, they could use a pampering session, but they’re fine, and a mere thirty-one years young.

And that’s when I considered my options…

The End.
