Dear Emily,
First and foremost, I want to express my love for you. This is the most crucial message I want to convey as you embark on this thrilling new chapter of your life. While I don’t have all the answers to life’s mysteries, I do believe I have valuable insights that can aid you as you transition into college life.
I realize I may come across as quite a bit older in your eyes, but the truth is, I remember being in your position like it was yesterday. Feel free to roll your eyes if you like; I certainly would have at your age. I thought I had everything figured out, only to realize later that I was often mistaken. With the advantage of hindsight, I can now impart some wisdom that will serve you well.
Here are ten essential points that I hope you keep in mind as you start this journey:
- Embrace Mistakes: You will make plenty of mistakes, and that’s perfectly okay. Each misstep is an opportunity to learn and grow. Just remember, don’t be reckless about it; foolishness is not a good look on anyone.
- Be True to Yourself: Always remain authentic to who you are. If you’re faced with challenges or fears, confront them head-on. The only exception? If someone at a party insists you are their soulmate after just a glance—run! Your journey of self-discovery will take time and reflection, so focus on understanding yourself without being tied to anyone else.
- Stay Engaged: The initial weeks of college are crucial for forming friendships. Resist the urge to retreat to the familiarity of home; it could hinder your opportunities for connection. Consider leaving your car at home for the first few months. If homesickness strikes, fight the urge to escape. Get involved, meet new people, and don’t underestimate the value of stepping outside your comfort zone.
- Prioritize Your Studies: College is serious business. I wish I had taken my academic responsibilities more seriously from the start. Don’t hesitate to seek help when needed. Remember, it’s okay to fail sometimes; it doesn’t define your worth or potential.
- Keep an Open Mind: You might think you know what you want to do with your life, but trust me—you don’t. Avoid rushing into decisions about your career. Explore various options and allow your interests to evolve. You might surprise yourself and discover a passion you never knew you had.
- Have Fun: College is a unique time in your life. Make the most of it! Enjoy the freedom and experiences that come your way. Remember, you only get one chance at this adventure, so live it fully.
- Make Responsible Choices: Use common sense in your decision-making. Avoid risky situations, especially when it comes to alcohol and driving.
- Be Wary of Toxic People: Stay clear of individuals who may not have your best interests at heart, even if they are charming. Your instincts are powerful; trust them.
- Foster Female Friendships: Building connections with other women is vital. These friendships will be a source of support and joy throughout your college experience.
- Stay in Touch with Family: Your mom will miss you dearly, so make it a point to call her often. But if you ever feel overwhelmed and think about heading home after your first week, resist the temptation. I’ll be here to encourage you to stick it out and keep going.
In closing, remember to always pair yoga pants with a long, flowing top—it’s a winning combination!
With all my love and support,
Aunt Sarah
