Hello, America! It’s your friendly neighbor to the north, Canada.
Can we have a moment to chat? Over the last month — and frankly, the past year — there’s been quite a bit of commotion coming from your side of the border. With the election heating up, we understand that things can get a bit louder than usual. Typically, we don’t mind the noise; in fact, we enjoy keeping up with your political happenings. We just wrapped up our own election not too long ago, and we’re sure it didn’t escape your notice, right? Just kidding; we know you probably missed it.
You might have spotted our new Prime Minister, though? Much like your former President, he’s a vocal advocate for gender equality, has a wonderful sense of humor, and even enjoys surfing. He’s the kind of guy who ends up photobombing weddings while on vacation! Plus, he emphasizes evidence-based policy — you’d think this would be a given, but here we are.
Leadership Matters
This brings us to the topic we wanted to discuss: leadership. Now, we get it; you might not be particularly invested in our Prime Minister, and that’s perfectly fine. We don’t go around proclaiming ourselves as the “Leaders of the Free World,” after all. However, your actions have a real impact on the global stage, and what’s happening in your country can affect us all in significant ways.
Usually, we find your political landscape intriguing. We often lean toward progressive ideals, so we were fans of President Obama. A President McCain or Romney wouldn’t have fazed us too much either. But here’s the kicker: One of your political parties has nominated a candidate who genuinely frightens us. It’s hard to articulate just how unsettling this is, and it makes us question what the future holds for all of us on this rapidly spinning rock.
Global Concerns
And we’re not alone in our concerns. Other nations are also feeling uneasy about your election. There are whispers in Eastern Europe about potential broken commitments due to a certain candidate’s beliefs that longstanding alliances are merely a means of extortion. Meanwhile, Japan is getting a bit jittery as that same candidate has suggested leaving them with a few nuclear weapons and calling it a day. Just recently, he referred to the Philippines as a “terrorist nation,” which has left us scratching our heads.
We’ve heard alarming reports that this candidate seems to think nuclear weapons are a viable solution for complex issues, which is a daunting prospect for the rest of us. We watch our children playing in our backyards, growing up, attending school, falling in love, and crafting their own futures. We certainly don’t believe that the best legacy we can offer them is an existence amidst destruction.
Beyond his apparent ignorance about the implications of nuclear weapons, this candidate seems to forget that several other countries have such weapons too. And some of those nations can be a bit unpredictable, especially when an American leader talks about abandoning allies, befriending bullies, and initiating trade wars with nuclear-armed states.
A Hope for the Future
So, America, we’re close enough to have this candid conversation, and we know you’re capable of better. We hope for a brighter future for us all.
With affection,
Your Neighbors Up North
