The morning rush is a whirlwind. I stumble out of bed later than I planned, the chaos of getting my little one ready for daycare leaves me a few minutes behind schedule. As I step into the office, I mentally shout, “I’m here! I’m ready to work!” even if my mascara tells a different story, having streaked down my cheeks from the tears shed during my commute.

Once at my desk, the first thing I do is call to check on my baby. The clock ticks away, and before I know it, it’s time to pump. I manage to squeeze in some work between my thoughts of home and the little one. I can’t shake the feeling of longing, and I desperately try to hold back tears. Time to pump again, I remind myself.

Lunchtime rolls around, and my mind drifts to thoughts of quitting and never returning. I pick up my phone for a “quick call” to see how my baby is faring. Hearing the cries in the background makes me gasp for breath into a paper bag. Oops, “let down” again; it’s time to pump, and I feel like I’m fading fast.

The worry creeps in: Am I going to lose my job? I try to focus on the tasks at hand, but my mind races back to home. I wonder if my baby has calmed down. It’s best to call again, just to check in. I start brainstorming financial alternatives to working away from my little one, but every idea feels bleak and unfeasible.

Eventually, I head home, only to do it all over again the next day. It’s a cycle of love, worry, and juggling responsibilities that only a working mom can truly understand. For more insights into parenting and the challenges we face, check out other stories on Modern Family Blog.
