This weekend marks my 20th high school reunion, or at least that’s how I phrase it for convenience. But calling it “high school” hardly does justice—our class, a tight-knit group of 100, journeyed through twelve long years together.
When you share so much time with the same people, it transcends mere schooling; it encompasses your entire childhood.
You remember walking nervously down the hallway on that first day of first grade, pretending to be brave. You lost your first teeth side by side, chased each other around the playground, and yes, even dealt with pesky lice. You learned new words—both good and bad—and donned braces with a sense of dread. You experienced the sting of exclusion, the thrill of first love, and the embarrassment of bad haircuts and fleeting fashion trends. (I still chuckle at that phase when girls wore ties—thankfully, my mom has saved a picture or two).
Then came the milestones: getting your braces off, piercing your ears, battling acne, and donning glasses. Through it all, you fell in love again, and again you discovered the weight of your words. Gossip flowed, and you learned just how it felt to be the subject of whispered conversations.
You passed notes that sometimes ended up in front of the whole class when a teacher caught you red-handed. You created collages, made mixtapes, and filled each other’s yearbooks with memories. You learned bravery together—taking risks, trying out for teams or plays, standing up for your beliefs, and leading your peers. You even had your first sips of contraband drinks, convinced you were far more mature than your age suggested.
You stumbled upon harsh truths: Santa Claus wasn’t real, you weren’t invincible, and that life isn’t always black and white. You learned that your parents don’t have all the answers, and neither do your friends—though you initially believed they did.
Together, you faced rejection. You dealt with heartbreaks from first loves, friends, coaches, and even teachers who didn’t appreciate your work as much as you did. You tasted the sweetness of success: acing a test, scoring the winning goal, or getting accepted into college.
Graduation came as a bittersweet farewell, filled with diplomas, photographs, and promises of eternal friendship. Some of those promises held true, while others faded with time.
As you gather 20 years later, all these memories flood back. You see familiar faces—some you encounter regularly and others you haven’t seen in decades. It’s a poignant reminder of not just who they have become, but who you were as well: the child, the adolescent, the teenager.
Because you didn’t just attend classes together; you grew up side by side.

In summary, your high school reunion is more than just a gathering; it’s a celebration of shared experiences, growth, and the enduring bonds formed during those formative years.
