5 Dresses I Can’t Part With

As I sift through my wardrobe, I try to follow the classic rule of decluttering: if I haven’t worn something in a year, it’s time to donate or toss it. While I haven’t fully embraced the minimalist lifestyle like some, I do make it a point to evaluate my closet regularly, packing away blazers and discarding old tees. Even my wedding dress found a new home at Goodwill after years tucked away in my dad’s trunk. I cherished that dress and the memories it held, but I simply didn’t need to keep it around; my wedding day is forever etched in my heart through photos, my ring, and the love of my partner.

However, there are a few dresses that I just can’t seem to let go of, even if they haven’t seen the light of day in ages.

  1. My First Little Black Dress: This cocktail dress was a lifesaver during my college days and those tight years after graduation. When I needed something chic for a work event, I finally treated myself to a new little black number with a touch of lace and silk buttons. Wearing it made me feel like I had stepped into adulthood.
  2. The Dress of Growth: We’ve all made fashion faux pas, right? Mine was a reversible dress I bought for a cousin’s wedding back in 2002. The idea of two dresses in one seemed brilliant—until I realized that reversible is only a good feature for jackets or blankets, not formal wear. Every time I see that dress, it reminds me of how far my style has come.
  3. The Vacation Dress: A pink strapless dress that has graced many weddings, my rehearsal dinner, and even our Hawaiian honeymoon. Every time I catch a glimpse of it, I’m transported back to that beachfront restaurant in Kauai. While my dining attire has shifted to kid-friendly restaurants, this dress is reserved for special occasions—like a future trip back to Hawaii.
  4. The Stage Dress: Participating in a local performance while 14 weeks pregnant was a unique challenge—finding a stylish dress that fit my growing belly. After several shopping trips and returns, I found the perfect eyelet tank dress that not only met my criteria but also gave me the confidence to share my pregnancy news with 300 attendees. Amazingly, it still fits nearly a year later.
  5. The Dress That Makes Me Shine: This deep raspberry silk dress is a true gem. I’ve worn it across various gatherings, and even though it’s distinctive enough that I usually avoid repetition, it just makes me feel fantastic. We all deserve a dress that gives us that boost, and I plan to keep rocking this one until the feeling fades.

I may not have time for scrapbooking these days, but these dresses hold my memories without the need for photos. Their presence in my closet is a constant reminder of my journey.
