The Parenting Anger Translator: A Guide for Caregivers

While I have never stood before Congress or addressed world leaders, I do face a formidable audience daily: my children. They are the ones who seem to fully absorb the latest highlights from their favorite shows but struggle to comprehend simple instructions like “please put on your shoes.”

In a manner similar to a public figure, I try to communicate calmly and with understanding. I remind them, “I know you don’t want to wear shoes, but it’s important.” I try to impart wisdom—“You’ll appreciate having shoes on when we go outside”—and rely on logic, “But you do love those shoes!” Yet, despite my well-intentioned approach, it often fails. Here are six things I say to my kids that would benefit greatly from having an anger translator of my own.

1. “I’m sorry, sweetie, we can’t have a playdate today.”

REALLY? I CAN BARELY HANDLE YOU BY YOURSELF, LET ALONE ADD ANOTHER CHILD TO THE MIX.

2. “I understand that this macaroni and cheese is shaped like farm animals instead of bunnies, but trust me, it’s the same.”

FARM ANIMALS? BUNNIES? BACK IN MY DAY, IT WAS JUST “PASTA.” JUST EAT IT!

3. “It’s 16 degrees outside; shorts aren’t appropriate.”

EVERY SINGLE DAY, YOU COME DOWNSTAIRS IN SHORTS AS IF I WON’T NOTICE YOUR CHILLY LEGS! PUT ON SOME PANTS ALREADY!

4. “Time for homework!”

LOOK, I KNOW THIS FEELS USELESS, BUT IF YOU DON’T TURN IT IN, I CAN’T HELP BUT THINK YOU’LL END UP LIVING IN MY BASEMENT FOREVER, RUINING MY DREAM OF MOVING TO A PEACEFUL ARRONDISSEMENT IN PARIS ONCE YOU GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL. SO GRAB A PENCIL AND GET TO WORK!

5. “You’re siblings; you love each other and need to get along.”

NOT REALLY. YOU CAN HARBOR RESENTMENT AS LONG AS YOU DO IT QUIETLY.

6. “Please, really, take your things to your room.”

ONCE UPON A TIME, THE MESS ON MY KITCHEN TABLE CONSISTED OF TAKEOUT BOXES AND EMPTY CANS. NOW IT’S JUST SOCCER BALLS AND SPIDER-MAN TOYS. IF I FIND YOUR DIRTY SHIN GUARD IN THE KITCHEN ONE MORE TIME, I MIGHT JUST LOSE MY MIND.

It’s a tough gig, but we all wish for a little understanding sometimes, don’t we? In conclusion, effective communication with children can often feel like a battle. While our calm and reasoned tones may not always elicit the desired responses, understanding the underlying frustrations can help us navigate these challenges more effectively.
