Parenting
It is widely recognized that motherhood is one of the most challenging roles one can assume. The journey becomes less complicated as children age, allowing for the development of stronger coping mechanisms. However, mothers with young children face unique challenges. With diaper changes, navigating the “terrible twos,” and sleep deprivation, these moms are often on edge. For the sake of your own peace and that of the mothers around you, it’s prudent to steer clear of the following behaviors:
- Offering sympathetic looks and suggesting a consultation when we walk by a beauty store.
- Inquiring “why,” since we’ve likely answered that question thousands of times already today.
- Mentioning Disneyland, Disney World, or anything related to Disney in front of our kids.
- Giving our children stickers, Play-Doh, or glitter.
- Expressing how much you adore weekends because they allow you to sleep in.
- Criticizing our screen time choices by saying TV is detrimental to children’s development.
- Boasting about how breastfeeding makes baby weight disappear effortlessly.
- Staring at us during public tantrums. Yes, we’re aware of the commotion and are attempting to resolve it.
- Commenting, “I can’t imagine being a stay-at-home parent; I’d be so bored.”
- Wearing yoga pants only when attending a yoga class.
- Telling us we look exhausted and suggesting we get more rest—thanks for the insight.
- Advising us that it’s never too soon to start applying for schools.
- Not helping us distract our kids from the tempting “impulse buy” items at the grocery checkout.
- Pointing out that coffee is addictive and condescendingly suggesting we should cut back.
- Sighing with irritation when we sit next to you on an airplane. Trust us, we’re not thrilled about the upcoming hours either.
If our reactions to your comments seem a tad excessive, please understand that even moms occasionally need to vent.
