Creating a Memorable Family Vacation in Yosemite

A few months ago, we discovered that Mia and the kids had one final week of summer bliss, while many children elsewhere were returning to school. Seizing the opportunity, we decided to take a spontaneous three-day, two-night trip to Yosemite National Park. It had been years since my last visit, and with the kids quickly becoming adept at embracing the camping lifestyle, it felt like the perfect time for an adventure.

We reserved a spot at the HOUSEKEEPING camp, uncertain of what that entailed, aside from the fact that we wouldn’t need to bring our own tent. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised. The accommodation resembled a canvas cabin with one concrete wall and a canvas roof extending over a small porch. Inside, there was a double bed, a bunk bed, ample storage, and even ELECTRICITY (perfect for charging phones, cameras, and tablets)!

We were fortunate to have a campsite right by the river. The kids immediately dashed down to skip stones and marvel at the towering mountains. Yosemite’s breathtaking beauty is truly captivating; the raw power of nature unfolds before your eyes, sometimes overwhelming, but in a wonderfully awe-inspiring way.

Here are some highlights from our successful trip:

  • Junior Ranger Campfire: This engaging experience introduced the children to the park’s wildlife. While discussions about bears caused a bit of concern for Max, he found comfort in the idea that we could offer a bear s’mores if we encountered one. Overall, it was a valuable lesson about the wildlife that inhabits the area and the importance of conservation.
  • Hiking Adventures: We kicked off our first full day with a hike to Yosemite Falls. The trail was relatively easy, with only minor inclines, but arriving to find a dry waterfall was somewhat disappointing. Undeterred, we continued to Bridalveil Fall, where we could see water flowing. This hike was more challenging, but the kids enjoyed climbing over rocks to get closer to the waterfall. Caution signs were posted, but that’s standard for any rock climbing, right?
  • Biking Expedition: Our bike ride was a resounding success! We rented bikes from the Curry Village rental station, opting for a tandem bike for Max and me, and a bike with a trailer for Mia and Lily. It took a moment to adjust, but we loved the experience. Max appreciated the tandem setup, allowing him to relax and enjoy the scenery without the stress of balancing. The bike paths were well-marked, leading us through the valley, where we paused for lunch at a picnic spot near Degnan’s Deli, which offers fantastic vegetarian options. After returning the bikes, we indulged in some ice cream in Curry Village.
  • Swimming Adventure: Following our bike ride, we discovered an excellent swimming spot along the river behind our tent cabin. The kids had a blast! Max even ventured out to a log in the deeper part of the river to show off his cannonball skills, while Lily was content rolling around in the sand. The water was refreshing, and the views were stunning!

Of course, we also enjoyed making s’mores, observing deer and squirrels, sharing spooky stories, and sitting around the campfire. If you’re considering a trip to Yosemite with your family, these activities can provide a great start.

Overall, our stay was brief yet fulfilling, with a long drive and a wonderfully tiring trip. We all fell in love with Yosemite, and given the varying conditions throughout the seasons, we’re eager to return to explore the park at another time of year.
