After a recent conversation that left me feeling empowered, I decided it was time to step up and take control of the kitchen by grilling some burgers. Let me clarify: I had zero experience with the outdoor grill. Seriously, I didn’t even know how to turn it on.
Nevertheless, I was determined. Armed with just a gas stove, a cast-iron grill pan, and a trusty internet connection, I was ready to tackle my culinary challenge. After researching how to use a cast-iron grill pan on a gas stove and the proper way to check hamburger doneness, I felt prepared. I did, however, stumble upon numerous warnings about grease fires and flare-ups. To mitigate potential disasters, I ensured the fire extinguisher was within reach—hidden under the sink to maintain an air of confidence in front of my children.
Setting Objectives for Operation Burger
Before I began, I set some clear objectives for Operation Burger. Unlike many mission statements, these were things I wanted to avoid rather than achieve:
- Setting the house on fire.
- Making the children ill from salmonella.
- Producing burnt patties that resembled hockey pucks.
- Sustaining any injuries.
Yes, setting the house on fire was a major concern.
As I gathered my ingredients and shaped the beef patties, I reflected on how my parenting goals had shifted since I found out I was expecting. After a challenging journey to conceive, learning I was having twins filled me with immense gratitude and a desire to be the perfect mother. I envisioned breastfeeding for years, using cloth diapers, making homemade baby food, teaching my kids to read by three, and engaging in daily arts and crafts—while keeping my house pristine and my fridge stocked with organic produce.
Fast forward nine years and a surprise daughter later, and those aspirations have largely evaporated. I managed just six weeks of breastfeeding for each child. The notion of cloth diapering was quickly abandoned, and jarred baby food became my go-to for convenience. My twins read at age six, watched educational videos right from infancy, and our home often looks like a tornado passed through. Arts and crafts projects? Too messy to handle! I even managed to kill two tomato plants last summer due to forgetfulness.
Now, standing in front of the stove, my only goals are to avoid burning the house down, keeping my body parts intact, and ensuring my kids don’t require a trip to the emergency room. If I can achieve these simple objectives, I will consider the day a success.
Aside from a brief moment of panic when flames flared up after flipping a burger, the cooking process went smoothly. The fire extinguisher remained safely stored away, and the burgers were declared “actually pretty good” by my discerning young diners. By the end of the night, we had no smoke alarms going off or any signs of food poisoning.
Overall, it was a resounding success!
