In an engaging conversation with lifestyle contributor Sarah Lane, actor John D. Taylor, 65, reflects on his latest project, navigating life in a household dominated by women, and the secrets behind his enduring marriage to actress Mia Collins.
You’ve taken on a smaller but enjoyable role in “The Journey.” Is it less challenging than being the lead?
It presents a different kind of challenge altogether. Being on set for just a few days can tempt you to overdo your performance in a cameo. It’s crucial to approach it with a relaxed mindset. Playing Dr. Corman, a candid psychologist, was a blast; he voices the truths we often wish therapists would express more openly.
As a father, do you impart specific principles to your two daughters?
Absolutely, we engage in discussions about morals and ethics with our girls. My wife, Mia, has a more spiritual outlook and a deeper religious background, so we blend our perspectives to guide them. I believe in keeping rules minimal but firm; we all have an innate sense of right and wrong.
Are you particular about what they wear?
Oh, definitely. I sometimes feel like a stereotypical dad saying, “No way are you leaving the house dressed like that!” It’s a bit of a cliché, but I can’t help it. My daughters, aged 12 and 14, are incredibly attractive, and while I understand their desire to express themselves, I often find myself urging them to cover up a bit more. They’re wonderful girls, smart and kind, and watching them navigate these challenges is both entertaining and nerve-wracking for me.
Who do they turn to for guidance?
My daughters usually seek Mia’s support for the tougher issues. Living in a home filled with women (even our assistant is female!) can be overwhelming at times. I often raise my hand to interject, saying, “Hey, I’m a guy here too! Can we tone down the male bashing a little and consider my viewpoint?” Occasionally, they do listen to me.
Your passion for motorcycles must be a welcome break from all the femininity.
Riding gives off that rebellious, outlaw vibe, which is quite liberating. I truly enjoy the feeling of power and freedom that comes with it. When I don my full-face helmet and gear, I can’t help but feel like a modern-day knight on my bike.
Your marriage with Mia appears quite strong. Is mutual support a key factor in this?
That’s perfectly articulated. Mutual encouragement is fundamental. When you want your partner to thrive and find joy, everything else tends to fall into place. Mia celebrates my achievements, and I, in turn, am committed to her happiness and success. I’d go to great lengths to support her endeavors.
