As a parent, I often find myself perplexed by the aversions my children hold towards certain routine activities. Recently, I took my kids for their dental checkups, which proved to be a rather interesting case study. My eldest was undergoing a cleaning, my middle child was getting x-rays, and my youngest was being examined with an intimidating dental tool. All three wore protective sunglasses to shield their eyes from the bright lights and were engrossed in an episode of a popular cartoon. Despite the allure of Cotton Candy-flavored toothpaste, we all came to a unanimous conclusion: visiting the dentist is an unpleasant experience.
This prompted me to delve deeper into the other activities my children detest. While none of these discoveries were particularly surprising, I was astonished to realize that these tasks are some of my absolute favorites.
1. Brushing Teeth
Fresh from the dental office, it was hardly shocking that my children resisted tooth brushing. However, I can’t help but view it as a delightful routine. I am truly thankful for toothpaste! I can’t fathom how anyone could forget to brush; don’t they feel the remnants of their last meal or at least catch a whiff of morning breath?
2. Showering
Each night, or most nights at least, I encourage my children to shower or take a bath, only to feel as if I’m leading them to a chamber of horrors. They squabble over who goes first, cry to postpone the event, and washing hair? That’s a scene filled with drama. I personally would stay in the shower indefinitely if they didn’t come knocking, hungry or bored.
3. Reading
This one baffles me. Once I finally coax them into a book or read to them, they usually become engaged. Yet, the resistance I encounter is dramatic. You’d think I was sentencing them to hard labor by simply asking them to put down their devices and pick up a book. Reading opens worlds of imagination and exploration—how can they resist?
4. Sleep
The pleas for extended bedtime hours are frequent. “But Mom, there’s no school tomorrow! Can we please stay up late?” they chant while I’m yearning for my cozy bed. “We’re not tired!” they insist, despite the fact they wake at dawn, full of energy. Don’t they see that the longer they resist sleep, the crankier I become?
5. Vegetables
It seems that if it’s green, it’s automatically deemed disgusting. Yet they have no problem indulging in sugary snacks. Convincing them to try a bite of broccoli—dipped in ranch, hummus, or topped with cheese—is often more challenging than anything else on this list. For me, greens make up a significant portion of my diet. I adore broccoli, salads, and all sorts of vegetables!
Reflecting on this list, I realize these five activities are fundamental aspects of daily life. My children despise them while I embrace them. The primary difference appears to be our ages. Ultimately, this realization leads me to conclude that perhaps I’ve become a bit too conventional or boring as I’ve aged. At least we can all agree on one thing: life offers a range of experiences.
