If you’re a parent of an elementary school-aged child, you’re probably all too familiar with the chaotic world of birthday parties. With multiple invitations flooding in for children you may not even know, weekends quickly become a whirlwind of celebrations.
To alleviate this stress, I’ve devised a concept known as the Universal Birthday Celebration (UBC). This event will take place on the first Saturday of every month from 4 PM to 6 PM. This timing is ideal, as most sports activities for baseball, basketball, or soccer are typically concluded by then, and it’s a convenient post-nap time for those children who still require afternoon rest.
The beauty of the UBC lies in its simplicity. You won’t need to send out invitations; just arrive at the designated time and check the list to see which children are celebrating their birthdays that month. Each month, we’ll rotate locations—September will be at the local YMCA, October at Pizza Garden, November at Chuck E. Cheese, and December at Tumble Jungle, to name a few.
To participate, families will contribute $300 to the UBC account and receive a UBC card. Every time you attend a celebration, simply swipe your card, and your account will be debited accordingly, which includes a $5 contribution toward a universal gift card for the birthday child—eliminating the hassle of duplicate gifts or ill-fitting clothing.
A parallel can be drawn to swim meets, where children receive ribbons for their participation. Similarly, the UBC will feature a system for thank-you notes that will be prepared and distributed before the event’s conclusion, ensuring that gratitude is expressed promptly.
However, it’s important to note that goody bags will not be included in this initiative; in fact, they are explicitly banned. This decision aims to reduce the tendency to overspend on items that may quickly be lost or broken by the time children return home.
So, take a deep breath and relish the upcoming weekends that are free of birthday party obligations. I look forward to seeing you on the first Saturday of the month at our next UBC event.
