Discovering Joy in Alternative Forms of Motherhood

One of the most gratifying aspects of my blogging journey has been the expansive network of friendships I have cultivated. I encountered Lisa Johnson, a fellow enthusiast of social media engagement, particularly after the release of her first book in 2014. In The Modern Aunt: A Comprehensive Guide for Contemporary Aunts, Great-Aunts, Godmothers, and All Women Who Cherish Children, Lisa highlights the profound love and joy found in the relationships between “aunties” and their nieces, nephews, godchildren, and others. Given Lisa’s deep reflections on happiness, I was eager to learn more about her insights.

What simple activity consistently boosts your happiness?

I love calling my nieces and nephews just to hear their voices. Their laughter is an instant source of joy for me.

What is something you’ve learned about happiness that you didn’t understand at 18?

As a teenager, I believed that being popular was synonymous with happiness. Now, I’ve come to realize that true happiness often leads to popularity, not the other way around.

Do you have a happiness mantra or motto that resonates with you?

“Keep moving forward.” A dear friend often reminds me of this when I share my achievements, emphasizing that more successes are on the horizon if I maintain a positive outlook.

Have you noticed behaviors or sayings in others that enhance or diminish their happiness?

In my own experience, I recognized that my earlier focus on what I lacked—namely, being a wife and mother—detracted from my happiness. Instead, I shifted my perspective to embrace who I am: a loving aunt and a dedicated entrepreneur. By adopting a positive self-description—viewing myself as “childfull” rather than childless—I discovered that happiness is a personal construct. This realization prompted the launch of SavvyAuntie.com in 2008 and the writing of The Modern Aunt. Many women have since celebrated their valuable roles as aunts and godmothers, which has enriched both their lives and mine.

Do you actively work on enhancing your happiness? If so, how?

Every day. I practice the art of letting go—not in the sense of giving up on my goals, but in understanding that the relationship between effort and outcome isn’t always immediately clear. If I undertake an action I believe will lead to happiness and it doesn’t pan out, I trust that future successes may emerge from unexpected avenues. Releasing my preconceptions about what should bring me joy—while holding on to the belief that all endeavors lead to greater happiness—has become my ongoing challenge. My commitment to happiness remains steadfast.

In summary, the journey toward finding joy in alternative forms of motherhood can be enriched by reframing one’s perspective and embracing the unique roles we play in children’s lives. A sense of fulfillment and happiness can stem from self-definition and understanding the intrinsic value of our contributions to family and community.
