On January 6 of this year, Florida became the 36th state to recognize same-sex marriage, and my partner Jamie and I were thrilled to take this monumental step. Over the past eight years, we’ve built a life together: purchasing a home, merging our finances (let’s just say Jamie covers most of it), and raising our son, Noah, for the past four years.
While many people envision elaborate weddings filled with stunning flowers, meticulous planning, and picture-perfect ceremonies, our wedding was far from traditional. Ours was a spontaneous, joyous event celebrating marriage equality, and it was undeniably better than the conventional route for several reasons:
11. Minimal Planning Required
Typically, weddings demand extensive planning and meticulous attention to detail. What type of glassware will we use? Where will everyone sit? What romantic venue should we choose? For us, it was simple: a Facebook invite to meet at the courthouse in three days. Done! Even our officiant appeared out of nowhere.
10. A Shared Experience
Traditional marriages can often feel isolating, with just a couple contemplating their future together. Our wedding, however, felt like a collective celebration of love, surrounded by countless other couples who were also tying the knot. The excitement in the air was palpable, and we even received a number—ours was A26.
9. Including Our Child
One aspect of traditional weddings that feels out of sync is the absence of children when it comes time for the ceremony. As a same-sex couple, we were fortunate to have the privilege of raising our son long before we could legally marry. Noah’s presence made our ceremony even more meaningful.
8. Cost-Effective
The expenses associated with a conventional wedding can be staggering—dresses, venues, catering, and more can lead to significant debt. Our wedding? A few rings, new outfits, and we were good to go!
7. Unexpected Guests
The police officers present at our wedding weren’t strippers (a common expectation at such events). They were actually law enforcement officials, which added an interesting twist to the day.
6. Midnight Ceremony
What’s more rebellious than getting married at 12:01 am on a Tuesday? No one would normally choose such an hour, but it felt exhilarating. Perhaps it was a touch of youthful defiance, or just a late-night cup of coffee fueling our excitement.
5. Unique Venue
Our ceremony was held in a government building, which may not seem glamorous but had its own charm. From passing through metal detectors to the large jury duty room where the ceremony took place, it was a delightful juxtaposition of mundane and monumental, complete with beautiful wedding cakes and refreshments.
4. Notable Attendees
Did the County Clerk and Sheriff attend your wedding? Didn’t think so. Their presence underscored the historic nature of our event.
3. Shared Anniversary
We share our wedding anniversary with many other couples across Florida, creating a sense of camaraderie. Whether you hear of a coworker celebrating on January 6th, you can bet they likely have a similar story.
2. Meaningful Connections
We were joined by two incredible women, Mia and Lily, who have been instrumental in our lives. Their presence at our wedding helped reinforce the values of love and support that we want to instill in Noah.
1. Love at the Core
Ultimately, the foundation of our marriage is love—not just between Jamie and me, but also the love that envelops us from family and friends. We never expected to marry, having grown up in a world that often marginalized our identities. This historic moment was a culmination of our struggles and triumphs, and the joy we felt was immense.
Our marriage may be one of many, but it holds a unique significance fueled by the battles we fought for equality. Love truly is transformative.
