The 7 Most Frustrating Questions Parents Encounter

As a parent of three young children—a 6-month-old, a 5-year-old, and a 7-year-old—I cherish my little ones. However, parenting can sometimes be overwhelming. Well-meaning individuals without kids often ask me about my parenting experience. Though I respond politely, certain questions trigger irritation after hearing them repeatedly. Here are my thoughts on a few of the most frustrating inquiries:

  1. “How do you handle three kids?” What kind of answer do you expect? Should I break down and confess that managing three children can feel like a struggle? The transition from two to three felt like someone tossed an additional baby into the mix while I was already treading water. Honestly, I often feel like parking my minivan—filled with wailing children—on the roadside and running into the woods. So, how do I manage? Not particularly well, if I’m being honest. Is that what you wanted to know?
  2. “Do your kids ever argue?” Really? Did you never quarrel with your siblings? My kids bicker over nearly everything. Just last week, I had to intervene in a wrestling match sparked by my daughter wanting to sniff my son’s fart. The week prior, they were arguing over string cheese. Yes, kids argue. When they’re not fighting, I suspect they’re scheming something—probably a heist.
  3. “Did you catch last night’s episode of Parks and Recreation?” While this may not seem like a kid-related question, it certainly is. I no longer control the television; my kids do. Last night, I was subjected to Yo-Gabba-Gabba and then Pokémon. If the character isn’t animated or a puppet, just assume I haven’t seen it.
  4. “Why are your eyes so red? Did your kids keep you awake?” Absolutely! I spent two hours last night changing sheets and searching for my daughter’s beloved stuffed animal. Ugh, at this point, I want to throw that stuffed animal out! If you see a tired parent, just assume the kids are the culprits and refrain from commenting.
  5. “Do your kids ever talk back?” Oh, certainly not! My children are perfect little angels who only express themselves with politeness. Just yesterday, my five-year-old called me a “fart-face” for denying her Netflix access, and my 7-year-old told my wife she “sucked” for not giving him an ice cream sandwich. I did send them to their rooms, but that didn’t change the reality.
  6. “What’s that white substance on your shirt?” It’s probably vomit. I can guarantee that tomorrow, there will be more. If it’s not white, it’s likely some other bodily fluid. I have a baby, so this is just part of the territory.
  7. “I bet your home is filled with love, right?” Well, it’s also filled with messes, boogers, and mysterious wet spots. While I can’t explain all the odors, my heart melts every time my 7-year-old jumps into my arms, or my 5-year-old shows off a new dance. And yes, the baby’s joyful squeals are undeniably adorable.
