11 Aspects of Gratitude This Thanksgiving

Each year, my family takes great joy in hosting Thanksgiving at our home. A cherished tradition of ours involves gathering around the table to express gratitude before indulging in a festive meal. Amidst the usual expressions of appreciation for food, family, health, and shelter, I would like to share 11 unique things that I genuinely appreciate this year.

  1. I am grateful for children who allow me a little extra sleep, ideally until at least 8 AM. Even better are those who, upon waking, head straight to the living room, turn on the Thanksgiving Parade, grab a glass of chocolate milk, and don’t seem to notice my absence until nearly 9 AM. Truly a blessing!

  2. I appreciate that our family does not partake in any Turkey Trot or 5K runs on Thanksgiving. While I admire those who choose to be active on a day dedicated to feasting, I opted to remain on the couch last year instead of joining a local event.

  3. I am thankful for wine. The larger the bottle, the better!

  4. I am grateful for family members who engage our children in games like football, Wii, Xbox, Uno, or board games while I navigate the kitchen chaos of preparing a grand meal. I’d be fine if they were teaching my children to build rockets, as long as they keep them occupied while I handle a hefty turkey.

  5. I am thankful for a holiday that passes without my kids squabbling. (A rare occurrence!)

  6. In a similar vein, I appreciate that the day goes by without any adult disagreements. (Another rarity!)

  7. I am thankful for any day when I can avoid wearing a bathing suit, especially when surrounded by an abundance of food. The Fourth of July pales in comparison.

  8. Did I mention my gratitude for wine?

  9. I appreciate those who immediately clear away plates, utensils, and glasses after the meal, transforming my kitchen into a clean haven. They work like a well-oiled machine, and once everything is cleaned, I feel like celebrating them with a twirl around the room.

  10. I am thankful that we only host Thanksgiving and not other holidays.

  11. And of course, I’m grateful for leftovers.

In summary, Thanksgiving is a time for reflection and gratitude, and while traditional acknowledgments are important, I also find joy in the little things that make the holiday special.
