Summer Camp for Adults: No Counselors, Just Fun!

Last June, my partner and I attended a Bat Mitzvah at a sleepaway camp nestled in the Poconos. We spent two days in a place with unreliable cell service, indulging in camp cuisine, sipping on bug juice, and sleeping on narrow cot-sized beds in segregated bunks with mostly unfamiliar faces. And honestly, it was a blast! So what if I had to prepare for the Saturday night dance in a cramped bathroom with ten other women vying for a glimpse in the single small mirror? There were s’mores! And Coronas! Plus, an exhilarating tug-of-war! I even sported face paint and a blue tutu all weekend because we’ve got spirit, yes we do!

I may have gotten a bit overzealous. As my children prepare for their fifth consecutive summer at sleepaway camp, I can’t help but feel a pang of envy watching that bus pull away from the drop-off area each year. I’m not alone in my longing; a company called Camp No Counselors has emerged to cater to adults, offering a weekend filled with activities and cocktails at various camps nationwide.

Founded by Max Bennett in 2013 after he organized a weekend retreat for friends, Camp No Counselors aims to provide a space for adults to reconnect with their more authentic selves. “As adults, we usually find ourselves in situations where confidence is key, but we rarely get the chance to be genuinely vulnerable,” he states on the Camp No Counselors website. “Camp offers that unique opportunity. I wanted more people to experience it.”

Upcoming Camp Dates

If you’re ready for some camp fun, consider these upcoming dates: June 4-7 in Chicago, May 28-31 and September 4-7 in New York, August 20-23 in Nashville, and October 1-4 in Los Angeles. The prices range from $475 to $575, which includes roundtrip transportation, three nights of co-ed lodging, all meals and snacks, themed nighttime festivities, and a variety of activities like archery, arts and crafts, softball, slip n slide, tubing, wakeboarding, and ziplining.

The weekend culminates in a camp-wide talent show on the final night, where it’s common for participants to showcase their talents in front of those they just met days before. And yes, there’s an open bar for the entire weekend—Bloody Marys for breakfast included—for those who may need a little boost to perform.
