The Seven Stages of Shopping at Target With Children

  1. Denial
I have a goal: to visit Target. I have a child in tow. We can tackle this together. It won’t resemble our previous disastrous trips. We’re going in to grab the essential toilet paper and milk, and we’ll exit with just those items. There will be no tears from either of us this time.
  2. Anger
Why is this happening again? Why do I have children who can’t navigate a store without throwing a tantrum? This is frustrating. I can’t believe I’m dealing with this again.
  3. Bargaining
Alright, let’s stick to the Dollar Spot! You can select any toy from there! How about TWO toys? A glow stick and a plastic pail! Or maybe a pad of paper with some stickers! I’ll even throw in some candy—M&Ms for breakfast? Cookies? Anything to avoid a meltdown; I’ll do whatever it takes.
  4. Guilt
What have I done to deserve a child like this? Was it the formula I chose? The pacifier that lasted too long? The co-sleeping? Late potty training? Why is he so reliant on toys? Does he not receive enough affection? What am I doing wrong?
  5. Depression
I must be the worst parent ever. It feels impossible to take my children anywhere without chaos ensuing. This is disheartening.
  6. Acceptance
Fine, go ahead and choose a toy from the aisle. You win this round. There goes my fun money for the week, kid. Take your new toy. Are you happy now? Good, that’s a win for one of us.
  7. Regret
What was I thinking? I should never have done that. Lesson learned once again: Target and children do not mix well. I mean it this time.
