A Scene from Parental Life

Setting: A living room cluttered with damp towels from the pool, a sink overflowing with dirty dishes, and an overwhelming sense of disorder.

In the midst of this chaos, young Mia is wailing at the top of her lungs for reasons unknown. Meanwhile, Leo, completely unclothed, dashes around the house chanting, “I have a big booty!” over and over again. Max, sporting six pairs of mismatched socks, is attempting to glide across the family room floor like an amateur skater.

Enter the babysitter.

Leo immediately cries out, “No!”
Max shouts from the bathroom, “Mom, I need to make a big poop!”
Mia stomps upstairs in frustration.
And just like that, pandemonium reigns.

I exclaim, “You’ll never guess what just happened! I just landed a book deal—a real, live book deal!”
Max calls from the bathroom, “Mom! Hurry up! I need you to wipe me!”
Leo sticks his finger up his nose, inspects the findings, wipes them on my pants, and walks away nonchalantly.
Mia discovers her computer game has been switched off and declares that I am the worst mother alive.

The babysitter responds, “Wow! That’s so exciting! What’s the book about?”
Max interrupts, “I don’t think you wiped me all the way; I feel poop in my tushy.”
Mia retorts, “Did you not hear me? You are the meanest mother ever! Meaner than any of my friends’ parents. Meaner than Miss Hannigan. Meaner than a witch!” The weight of her words hangs in the air.
An uncomfortable silence follows.

I manage to say, “Um, parenting…”
The sitter stares blankly.

End scene.
