If you have access to television or social media, chances are you’ve encountered the name Floyd Mayweather. Although I am not a sports enthusiast or even a boxing aficionado, as a woman, partner, and parent, I feel compelled to ask those who champion Mayweather’s boxing prowess a crucial question:
What Makes Floyd Mayweather Admirable?
What makes Floyd Mayweather admirable as a person? Not just as a boxer, but as a human being. He must be a humble individual, right? No? Then perhaps he is someone who treats others with dignity, particularly the women in his life who have shown him love and nurtured his children. Oh, that’s not it either? Well, then surely he must be someone who acknowledges his mistakes, offers sincere apologies, and actively seeks to improve himself. Oh dear. Is that a resounding “no” I hear?
If none of these qualities represent who Floyd Mayweather is, then can someone clarify exactly who he is? A search online reveals descriptors such as abuser, coward, greedy, bully, liar, cheater, manipulator, and arrogant—among many others. Yet, despite this concerning portrayal, he has a legion of supporters, including notable politicians and celebrities. How can this be? More importantly, why does it happen?
Mayweather’s History of Domestic Violence
Mayweather’s history of domestic violence stretches back 14 years. Fourteen years. He has consistently denied accusations of physical assaults on five separate women, even in instances where his own children witnessed the violence. Imagine that—his own kids have seen their mother suffer at his hands, listening to her pleas for help.
In a CNN interview with a journalist named Sarah, he famously stated, “When it is all said and done, only God can judge me.” Ironically, he declined an opportunity to publicly donate to a charity for battered women during the same conversation.
He has defended fellow athlete Ray Rice, arguing that the NFL’s punishment for Rice’s domestic abuse was excessive. Surprised?
You might think he has faced severe consequences for his actions. What’s the worst punishment he has encountered? Just two months in jail. Sixty days. How is this acceptable? Why does society continue to applaud a man who has harmed multiple women?
Evading Accountability
When questioned by the media about the allegations, his typical response is, “PROVE IT.” If there are no photos, it never happened. Even if evidence existed, it is easy to imagine that it could easily be destroyed in the pursuit of entertainment and profit. His defiant attitude reveals a level of guilt that cannot be ignored.
We have allowed this man to evade accountability, all for what? Entertainment? So we can see him fight in the ring? Even if just one of these accusations holds truth, shouldn’t he be experiencing a moral awakening that urges him to apologize, seek help, and return with humility? Yet, he sleeps soundly.
Floyd Mayweather: A Role Model?
Floyd Mayweather represents cowardice, evading reality while cashing in on his fame. How does he serve as a role model for our children? How will you explain his status as a top boxer when your child asks why he mistreats women? What will you say when your son expresses a desire to emulate Mayweather? Or when your daughter wishes to marry someone like him?
Is Floyd Mayweather truly a champion? Or do denial, abuse, and narcissism illustrate a man who is failing at life? Who has likely caused countless individuals to endure suffering in silence?
The Bigger Picture
This matters. It matters immensely. The message being conveyed is clear: if you achieve a level of entertainment like Floyd Mayweather, you can escape the consequences of your actions. However, the deeper truth is that there are no winners here, only losers, with Floyd Mayweather being the biggest of them all.
He may be a boxing champion, but does anyone genuinely care about boxing? He is squandering his potential by perpetuating violence against women, and we sit idly by, cheering him on without consequence. This must change.
It is his children, along with their mothers, who deserve our support and compassion. Let us focus our energy on uplifting them instead.
