A Letter to My Daughter on Her 13th Birthday

Dear Emily,

Congratulations! You’ve officially transitioned into your teenage years. I anticipated that you would be thrilled about entering this new chapter, but it seems you’re rather indifferent about it.

I understand. The whirlwind of hormones, the onset of periods, and the skin changes are understandably overwhelming. You’re navigating the complex landscape of middle school, and soon, high school, while trying to carve out your own identity. I truly sympathize with you; this phase of life can be incredibly challenging.

Just yesterday, you mentioned that birthdays aren’t significant to you. You expressed that it’s merely another year gone by and that we all eventually face the end, so what’s the point? Hearing that was unsettling for me, but I must admit that I share similar thoughts at times.

I attempted to uplift your spirits, but you brushed me off. That’s perfectly fine. I trust that over time, my words will resonate with you, just as I hope you’ll reflect on what I’m about to share now.

It’s essential to understand that your existence holds immense value. You matter. Your actions and choices in life are significant. You have the chance to positively impact those around you, to love, serve, and believe in something greater than yourself. I have faith that there is a higher purpose awaiting you—one that carries eternal significance. I pray you never lose sight of the beauty and potential that resides within you. I look forward to witnessing how you will touch the lives of others.

I must confess, being a mother is one of the most daunting experiences. My desire is to nurture you without causing any harm or distress. I apologize for the divorce from your father; I hope that one day you will come to understand. Thank you for the grace you have shown me during this time.

You possess an extraordinary intellect. I encourage you to leverage it for the greater good. I appreciate your hard work in school—even on days when it feels pointless. Keep in mind: scholarships await you. Your efforts will pay off!

I wish I had your conviction at your age. The awareness you have about equality, diversity, and your desire to see a woman as President is commendable. I’m proud you choose to engage with meaningful issues rather than superficial ones.

I know my exuberance in public can embarrass you, and I completely understand that feeling. I felt the same about my own mother. She could be quite the source of embarrassment too! But I assure you, it gets better with time.

As you explore your independence, try to keep honesty at the forefront. Lying can create unnecessary complications. I’ve been both the giver and receiver of dishonesty, and I’ve learned that truthfulness fosters respect.

I recognize your desire to avoid work or a job altogether. If you discover a way to earn money while doing nothing, please share the secret—I’d love to join in!

I am grateful to have you as my daughter, even when you ignore me in the mornings. Watching Downton Abbey together? That’s true love.

I love you dearly.

Warmest wishes,
Mama
