As a passionate advocate for intersectional feminism, I’ve often been asked since the election, “What can I do? How can I help?” It’s heartening to see so many friends eager to promote racial equity, but it can be overwhelming to constantly direct them to the right resources. I don’t have a ready-made list of causes at hand, and while I’m happy to provide insights based on my experiences as a woman of color, it’s important for individuals to conduct their own research first.

If you’re genuinely committed to supporting the cause but feeling lost on where to begin, look no further than the Safety Pin Box. This subscription service was founded by two black women, Ava Johnson and Mia Davis, in response to the Safety Pin Movement that gained traction after the election of the 45th President. Many felt that this movement was more about white allies relieving their guilt rather than making impactful changes.

Ava and Mia, with their backgrounds in black activism, created the Safety Pin Box to help “white individuals who want to consistently contribute to Black liberation while engaging in meaningful support work and learning how to dismantle white supremacy.” According to their website, this initiative encourages allies to take action while also receiving guidance and educational resources from black women.

The Safety Pin Box is designed by black women, with proceeds going to Black Women Rising, which provides financial assistance to individual black women working toward the liberation of their communities. Every month, a selected recipient receives funds to help further their cause. It’s hard to argue that this commitment is more impactful than a travel-sized bottle of moisturizer!

There are various subscription tiers ($25, $50, $100) that include monthly tasks aimed at increasing awareness about specific subjects and key historical figures. Subscribers also gain access to exclusive “calls to action” and a dedicated Facebook group for discussions and questions. Each box has a unique theme; for example, one month focused on “Radical Empathy,” tasking subscribers to explore the life outcomes of elderly black individuals in their communities compared to their white counterparts.

Not being the target demographic, I spoke with a friend who subscribes to learn more about her motivation. “I wanted to take action. This was a fantastic way to contribute, and I feel great knowing where my money goes. There are many calls to donate to established organizations, which is important, but I wanted to specifically support black women,” she shared.

When I asked her why she chose to support black women, she explained that much of her activism knowledge stems from their influence. She has also connected with other subscribers, participating in local calls to action. She’s truly embodying the spirit of putting her money where her values are.

Ava explained to me, “Our target audience is anyone who recognizes that race is an issue, feels compelled to act, and doesn’t know where to start.” In these critical times, it’s essential for those who feel called to action to seek out ways to engage. If this resonates with you, I encourage you to subscribe. Break free from inaction and support a meaningful cause.
