A Few More Things I’ve Decided Not to Care About (And You Shouldn’t Either)

I had a bit of a breakdown last night. And when I say “breakdown,” I mean the kind that involves some loud, irrational shouting and maybe a few choice words, followed by a retreat to the bathroom with my phone and a box of Thin Mints—yes, that kind of breakdown.

I could dive into the details that caused this outburst, but ultimately, it came down to misallocated cares. Let me reiterate: There’s only so much emotional energy we can expend. If we waste our cares on too many trivial matters, we wind up depleted. We lose our cool, end up screaming, crying, and hiding with our cookies or a glass of wine.

Every so often, it’s essential to reevaluate our emotional budget. There’s an art to adopting a carefree mindset, and sometimes we need to declutter our emotional load. After all, there’s a limit to how long you can hide in the bathroom with snacks and wine.

I’ve shared my resolutions about caring less before, but here are a few more things I’ve decided to let go of:

Hiding in the Bathroom with Cookies

Maintaining composure is exhausting. Sometimes, a mom needs to indulge in a whole sleeve of cookies. No judgments here!

Losing My Temper

I generally try to keep things together. I take deep breaths and let go of what I can. But some days are outright chaotic, and there are moments when cookies and essential oils won’t cut it. Occasionally, you need to vent—scream “Forget this!” and let your emotions flow. It’s perfectly okay to get a little dramatic now and then, and I refuse to feel guilty about it.

Finding My Voice and Channeling My Inner Warrior

I’m a natural people-pleaser. I want everyone to be happy and get along. However, sometimes it’s necessary to channel that inner warrior and express my thoughts freely. And guess what? It feels liberating!

Social Media Nonsense

The internet can feel overwhelmingly toxic. With the constant barrage of humblebrags, self-righteous posts, and negativity, it can be daunting to log on. Thankfully, the unfriend and unfollow buttons are lifesavers for mastering the art of not giving a damn.

Swearing

I embrace my colorful language. Telling me to tone it down is like asking me to stop drinking coffee or wearing my favorite leggings. That’s just not happening! For those who clutch their pearls at my choice of words, I say this: There are worse things than a well-placed swear word.

Laundry

I’m throwing in the towel—literally. Laundry, you win.

My Kids’ Cluttered Rooms

I aspire to be a minimalist, but the influx of “stuff” is relentless. Instead of losing my mind, I’ve decided to simply shut the door to my kids’ rooms and pretend it’s not a disaster zone.

PTA Commitments

I volunteer my time for various causes and am even the president-elect of my church board. But PTA? Not my jam.

Chin Hairs

As I age, I’ve come to accept wrinkles and the occasional breakout. But chin hairs? They can get out of hand fast! Instead of stressing, I just keep a pair of tweezers handy. If I can’t tackle them right away, at least I can plan my world domination with the time I save by not stressing over it.

Being a Trendy Mom

Staying updated on fashion, slang, and music trends is exhausting. I simply don’t have the time. Honestly, I’m still trying to figure out what “snatched” means!

Chasing Perfection

Perfection is plain boring. That’s why I’m all about the carefree attitude.
