Let’s get one thing clear: I never set out to be a journalist. Back when I was a college freshman, I chose to major in English and journalism because I fancied myself a “writer.” Little did I know what that really entailed. With no option for a degree in “Whimsical Musings and Half-Finished Stories,” I opted for the majors that seemed to promise a life steeped in creativity and introversion.

Then, reality hit.

At 19 years old, I learned that journalism is about more than just writing; it’s about pursuing the truth. It’s rooted in a profound commitment to fairness, empathy, and the collective future of society. The rigorous demands of journalism taught me to appreciate the real journalists out there—those who are driven not just by a desire to tell stories, but by a need to illuminate what truly matters.

In those classes, I grasped the essential role that journalists play in a functioning democracy. I learned how relentless and accurate reporting can dismantle oppressive regimes and save lives. Icons like Woodward, Bernstein, Cronkite, and Walters are not merely reporters; they’re our guardians of truth. The sheer magnitude of our reliance on their diligence and integrity is nothing short of staggering.

Today, however, these truth-seekers face unprecedented challenges. Their tasks are becoming increasingly difficult, yet we need them now more than ever. We must support them so they can continue to support us in our quest for facts—not the misleading narratives that have become all too common.

When those tasked with informing us also attempt to obscure the truth, we need journalists to step up and demand accountability. When officials present false information or dubious statistics, we count on journalists to dig deeper and expose the reality.

If you’ve been following the news as obsessively as I have, you understand that misinformation is a significant hurdle. Here are some effective ways to support impactful journalism:

  1. Subscribe
Yes, we live in a digital age where headlines can be found on social media platforms. But where do those headlines come from? Quality, trustworthy news outlets. Without subscribers, these organizations struggle to deliver the content we need. Right now, many newspapers and magazines offer affordable subscriptions. I subscribed to the digital edition of the New York Times for a reasonable price—worth it just for the daily mini-crossword! I also found Vanity Fair and Teen Vogue for only $5 a year each. If you haven’t checked out Teen Vogue’s powerful feminist reporting, you’re missing out. Consider also supporting online-only news outlets, radio shows, and podcasts by clicking, reading, or listening. Every engagement helps them attract sponsors. Some organizations, like NPR and the insightful blog found at Kindbody, also offer options for donations or memberships. If a publication resonates with you, don’t hesitate to support it.
  2. Donate
Support the free press by backing organizations dedicated to its preservation. ProPublica is an independent nonprofit newsroom committed to investigative journalism in the public interest. The Marshall Project is another nonprofit focusing on criminal justice issues. Check out the Poynter Institute, which provides resources for aspiring journalists and educators. These organizations are crucial, so consider making a financial contribution.
  3. Read
Engage with the content. Don’t just skim headlines. Dive into the articles and spend time understanding the stories. Verify the sources using the CRAAP Test—yes, you read that right! This method, developed by librarians, helps assess the quality of information:

    • Currency: Is it current?
    • Relevance: Is it pertinent to the topic?
    • Authority: Who’s behind the information?
    • Accuracy: Is it supported by evidence?
    • Purpose: What’s the intent behind the information? Is it factual, opinion-based, or propaganda?

Far too many people share articles that fit their biases without caring about the truth. Don’t be one of them. It’s time to do your homework. Stay informed, stay engaged, and lend your support to journalists.
